Problem with 18V l ion battery.

Today I was working on my yacht in the marina and was doing some light drilling work. I noticed some smoke coming from the battery. I looked at it for about 3/4 seconds and it appeared to be getting worse quite quickly. I threw the battery into a plastic bucket, raced up the stairs, across the deck then dipped the bucket into sea water. That seemed to stop any further chemical reaction. When I emptied the bucket the water was very gray.

I'm worried now about charging batteries in the car garage as I normally do. Does anyone else have similar concerns?
