Honda EU 2000i Companion Generator

Hi,

We are thinking about buying a Honda 2000i generator. If we plug our shore power into the generator will it charge our batteries? If so, how many amps per hour does it add to our 12-volt battery system? Thanks

Yes it will, but all that depends on what charger you have onboard.. The Honda will provide the juice, but your charger will be doing the charging. That model is extremely reliable and we loved ours, that was before we had enough solar and batteries to just not need anything.

Yes it will but you need a battery charger. The charge will depend on the size of your charger, size of the battery bank and condition of the batteries. I use a EU2000i with a 100 amp charger and a 600 amp battery bank. I often see over 90 amps charging when I first start the Honda and the batteries are down.

I use a short extension cord and a 15/30 amp pigtail to connect to my shore power.

My honda 1000 will power a 40 amp charger so I guess your 2000 will run an 80 amp charger. How much you charge depends on the size of your onboard charger.

You wont be sorry buying a honda. Have mine ten years. I bought the 1000 because I have a perfect spot to store it on the boat where a 2000 would not fit. But if you need a 2000 its a better buy; 100% more power for only 20% more dollars.

How big of a onboard charger do you have? The honda gen has the ability to charge batteries on its own with a cord that you can buy for that, it's output is 8 amps. Your onboard charger probably puts out way more than that so plugging into to your shore power inlets is the best way to do it. I could power my 30 amp ProMariner and with power management run anything else on the boat.

I don't think you can charge batteries with the Honda's 12v outlet. Not enough voltage.

We have a Xantrex 1000. How many amps do you think it will charge for 12-volt? Do we need to do anything special or just plug and charge? Thanks!

The little Honda will produce 1800W continuously I believe, and 1800W at 14V is about 128, so in theory it can produce 128 amps at 14V, of course nothing is 100% so I'd bet a 100 amp charger would push it pretty hard but it ought to do it.

You can charge batteries directly if you have the one that a shorepower cord does no plug into directly ,but at 8 amps it won't do much charging.

I'd buy the one that a shore power plug will plug into directly.

1000W into the batteries - IF your batteries are so low that they can accept that.

Just plug it into your SP with a cable adapter and use just like SP.

If you are talking about a Xantrex Freedom HF the charging output could be 20 or 55 amps depending on the model. The Honda EU2000i will handle either just fine. With this type of load the generator will stay nice and quiet too. That equals happy neighbors.

Keep in mind that even a Honda will make quite a bit of noise when you push near 1800 watts.

No when running the engine your alternator is charging. With the Honda your battery charger is doing the charging. The output will depend on the size of the charger, the size of the bank and the condition of the batteries. See post #3.

It would help if you gave us more info such as the size of your charger and battery bank.
