L450 Gennaker pole

Has anybody a gennaker pole, and how long? I consider buying a 7m pole for gennaker and 5 m for Genoa. But I'm not sure if 7 m is enough. Its the original gennaker but I don't the length of the foot, but probably about 8-9m.

Re: L450 Gennaker pole

Most Lagoons do not run a pole.

The 4 meters of boat either side of the center line on a L450 is usually enough for running Gennakers and Spinnakers.

The sheet is brought back to a block attached to the pad eye, on the rail just aft of the steps up to the helm.

PaulinOz is correct, poles are usually not required on cats.

However, your fellow countryman, Django37 has used a pole for devasating effect on his Lagoon 380, beating many larger "performance cats" and winning an ARC rally. He poles out his genoa to windward and run it wing on wing with a gennaker for a fast and controllable downwind rig.

Re: L450 Gennaker pole

I know it is not that common using gennaker/whisker poles at a catamaran, but in 2015 a L380 won the ARC+ and the skipper said afterwards that he couldn't have managed that good without the gennaker/whisker poles.
Furthermore it is more safe than sailing with a spinnaker during the night and squalls.

More and more i think you are correct. It is easier to quickly depower. Although you will need more like 9m length. How will you store and handle this thing?!?!

this drawing may give you some idea - borrowed from django to consider applying for my boat.

Re: L450 Gennaker pole

Yes, I'm afraid that 7m is too short even it is a long pole, and 9 m is not that easy to handle and store. I probably have to unpack my Gennaker and measure the foot length. But a 7m pole must never the less be better than none .....

Re: L450 Gennaker pole

During the ARC we had the big masthead spi up in the last 40 hours to Cap Verde. The Lagoon 400 Vaares, that came second on corrected time, also used a spinnaker pole. Click image for larger version
