As this excerpt from the 440 manual testifies, the 440 came with the short (USA) mast option. Indeed, 12.5sqm less sail area.

See below:

Sail area close hauled (Standard Europe mast) 113,30 m2
Sail area close hauled (Short mast) 100,70 m2
Battened mainsail (Standard Europe mast) 71,30 m2
Battened mainsail (Short mast) 58,70 m2

The mast will likely be a Sparcraft unit so I would contact them before you do anything.

If the sail area loss is a bother, you could at the same time lengthen the boom to get some (all?) back. You'll be needing a new mainsail anyhow...
