from ft lauderdale to bermuda, about 6 days.
from bermuda to azores about 12 days
from azores to faro or gibraltar about 6 days.
duties normal crewing sharing watches and all other tasks on a 42' catamaran.
crew will be either 3 or 4.
not a race!!
boat is a non smoking boat and 'dry' whilst at sea.
boat is well equipped, has just sailed from east to west and sailed the carib.
boat is fully provisioned, crew responsible for their own expenses.

Why ? What happen?

It's a big risk to go on someone's boat as crew. Really, you have no way of knowing if the captain is drunk, incompetent, nasty or suffers from other problems. You can't really know the condition of his boat or how he sails. You take a lot on faith and first impressions. That was MY mistake, not reacting to my FIRST impression of this particular captain. In my view [he would likely have the opposite view] he was nasty and a real SOB to be with for seven days with no escape. I was to go to FT Lauderdale, BDA, Azores and the UK on this cat. The boat was fine except the hatches leaked and he blamed me. How I could break his hatches is beyond me. He had a young woman on board crew 40years his junior] and acted like a leach in spite of the fact his daughter also was on the boat. My objective was to learn something...he did not teach a thing and was so curt and nasty in his manner that you just wanted to jump overboard. I stood my watches but for the last three days I would not even eat on that boat. I lost 12 pounds and that was the plus of the trip! I would have jumped overboard had I not jumped ship in Bermuda. Jumping off that cat was the single most enjoyable experience in years! It is the luck of the draw but there are warning signs. Go with your first impression...I should have. My warning signs is that he didn’t say thanks when I bought his gas for his rental car before we left. #2…he would not loan me a towel on the boat and made me take a cab into town go buy some [a 42’ cat without a towel?] and 3. making no attempt to share the check at dinner the evening before. Granted these are minor issues, but these gave me some pause right at the beginning before we set sail.
