Key West Liveaboard Slip

With elderly parents in Sarasota taking more and more of my time, I have decided to sell my Key West Liveaboard Slip Lease in Garrison Bight, and move the boat to Sarasota. I don't want to sell the boat, only the slip lease...BUT for the right price, I'll throw in the CAL28 (been wanting a cat anyhow). There is a 15 year waiting list to get one of these rare leases. Rates run ~$13/ft/mo plus utilities.

Asking $25K OBO, PM for more info.

Google Maps <<<<Center Pier, second slip from the seawall on the right.

What size boat could fit in this slip?

Wow, times sure have changed. In 1995 I lived aboard there for $8 a foot and there was no wait to get a slip.

Re: Key West Liveaboard Slip

FYI - You must sell the boat to the individual in order to transfer the slip into their name - the slip is only leased through the city for a period of 1 year at a time. You never "own" anything - furthermore, you need to check with the manager to see if you can put in a larger boat in that slip. They have changed a lot of rules.

Re: Key West Liveaboard Slip

This seems a bit odd. Pay $25 grand just to be able to pay the marina every month. I'v heard of buying slips for thousands of dollars, but I dont get how theres a 15 year wait for the garrision, but empty at KW bight.

Re: Key West Liveaboard Slip

Technically all of the above is correct, however most of the leases that have been sold in recent years have sold upwards of @$45-50K OVER the value of the boat.

@Fish... I've been there since '99, and started out at $8/foot as well, I did wait through the list back then, but it was only 3 years.

@Sailr... never heard of him.

@Anjin... They have changed a lot of things, one of which is the lease terms. it is three years now, with current lease holders paying less per foot ($11) than future, which is ~$13/foot. The newest lease is not out yet hence the (~) as I don't know the exact figure. You do "own" lease rights however; it is even stipulated in the lease how a leaseholder can "sell" his lease.

@Rabid... My slip is one of the largest single slips available in the marina @ 21x55 which would accommodate up to a 19' beam. It is a floating pier (newest in the marina) with finger piers. You are also correct there is no wait at KWB.... There are also no approved liveaboard leases there, and you either have to pay the transient rate, or stay aboard less then 7 days in any calendar month. At GB (in the live aboard section) there are no restrictions as to the number of occupied days per month, and the rate is less than half of the transient rates.

@Boatsail.... Yes in a way! As mentioned in the OP, I want to keep the CAL and the $25K is only for the lease. In order to sell the lease, I have to sell the boat in it. That boat can be any boat I own or have an interest in. What other buyers are doing is adding the lease holder as a partial owner to their vessel for $1, then the "new" boat is moved to the slip. After 1 month, the $1 interest is purchased back and the paperwork is completed with the City to transfer the lease. Alternately, I can sell the CAL with the slip, then buy it back a month later. Either way, it is not pioneering; the process has been repeated many times in the past with complete success by others.

I hope that answers everyone's questions.

ETA: the $25K is entirely negotiable!

I would guess the 50' clearance overhead wires at the entrance to GB would the be limiting factor. (assuming a sailboat)

Re: Key West Liveaboard Slip

The wires were raised and the chart was not updated. There is 65' clearance. I have taken boats with 54' of air draft in with no issues. However, the water is only 5' at MLW at my slip

Re: Key West Liveaboard Slip

Figured I’d BUMP this…..
$45K for boat and lease
$25K for lease alone
Both are negotiable
