Wanted For Free: Determine asking price before listing

The rules of classifieds state a price must be included in ads and I respect that. I have an item I'd like to advertise but have no idea of it's value. Can I post a new topic asking for feedback on a suggested asking price from the forum members? Thank you.

I'd say list it for what you think it's worth, I know hard to do, I'm in the middle of selling everything myself now, house closed yesterday, and most stuff I'm pretty much almost giving away, just to get rid of it as I have no idea what most of it will bring.
If you start high, you can always reduce the price in a few days.

Price is what you ask. Value is what it is worth.

If it is an item that often appears on e-bay or Craig's list, then check the range of those prices. If it is in good condition, place your asking price somewhere in the upper third of the prices asked. If it doesn't move, ask less or keep it and see if you can figure out a way to re-purpose it.

Don't post a new topic - just tell us what it is on this thread (maybe a picture) and hope for some responses. I can't see any reason for sensitivity or propriety around something like you ask.

Thanks. Yeah, can't find any used on Ebay etc. I know these are respected for their quality so figure there is some value here. I'm more interested in actually selling it than just listing it hence the question above.
So it worked perfectly when it was removed. Very heavy. Thanks again.

These were great heads in their day but unless someone is looking for parts, you generally cannot GIVE toilets away, especially when you factor in shipping costs. Search the Forum on toilets and heads.

Sorry but I'm guessing $15-20, or free if you want to get rid of it in less than a month. That giant handle isn't going to appeal to anyone unless it's for a collector's or vintage use.

I can buy a brand new Jabsco toilet on Defender for $170, and it comes with the lid that your's is missing, isn't super heavy, and has standard inlet/outlet hose sizes.

To determine pricing I'd compare to the competition ($170, new and clean) and then consider that used mattresses sold on the street or craigslist usually sell for about 10% of new price. And a slightly used mattress is less gross than a well used toilet.

I would argue that this head is better than anything currently for sale new and I believe parts are still available. You are in Maine where such things are valued. Try craigslist. I would eBay it for $200, although shipping is an issue.

Those are great heads. Someone out there wants it. I think I would try the $200 locally as shipping would be problematic.

I'm in the wouldn't have it camp, but as you say they are respected for their quality and that is true.
I'd say for someone who wanted one, $200 isn't too high.

Practical Sailor rated this the best manual head made. Comparing this to a cheap Jabsco is like comparing a new Volkswagen Bug to a classic Porsche.

It is true, it is heavy, but it is a fine toilet. We had a WC on our first Insatiable. When leathers became unavailable for the pump, Jim designed a plastic disc, that accepted quite a large "O" ring for the pump, and it worked absolutely perfectly with that modification. A new one costs lots more than $200; but, it would have a toilet seat.

Heavy, Yes, but an absolutely fantastic head. I have no idea how old the one on PILAR was when we found it 'out back' at Leonard's, in Moss Landing, Ca., in the late '70's, but it's still going strong. The weak point is the cut in the cast bronze rocker arm, where a screw tightens the piece onto the shaft. The first time it broke was in Palmayra, after 15 years of service. While waiting for replacement delivery from Hawaii, Bill carved a replica from a piece of micarta (which we kept as a spare). The same thing happened again three years ago, so I just put the micarta part back in, adding a small 'U' shaped spacer to the shaft, to keep the rocker arm in position. So far, so good...
