Bowsprit Heel Socket and Kranze Iron

I am finally getting ready to install our roller furling and figure this is the time to replace the bowsprit and bobstay.
Our bowsprit was bolted directly to the deck and I would like to use a proper heel fitting for the new bowsprit. I would also like to replace our short kranze iron with a bit longer iron (although the short one seems to have worked well for a long time).
So - I am looking for a heel fitting that will accept a 5 1/2 " x 5 1/2" heel and a 3 1/2" - 4" kranze iron.
Please let me know if you have anything.
Thanks

Hi MArk,

Certainly could be but I am not sure. I was going by the way Port Townsend Foundry spells it - they are the ones who make them.
Port Townsend Foundry in Washington
Thanks,

Tim

John Leather, in his 1970 edition of "Gaff Rig", spells it cranse.
Like schedule and shedule, I guess it depends on what "shool" you went to.
Cranse irons are also called spider-bands. Is this what you are looking to improve upon, or are you looking for a gammon-iron.fitting?

I think my gammon iron is ok - the kranze - cranse (there - got them both covered )
is the one I am thinking of. The one on our bowsprit is fine, but pretty short. As I understand it, a longer cranse is a bit more stable in the bowsprit and will have less chance of digging into the wood if that makes any sense.

Classic Marine’s article also spells it “cranse”:

As does John Leather in “The Gaff Rig Handbook”

I spell it cransiron and have one for sale. It's stainless, very sturdy but might be a bit larger in diameter than what you need. It's 5 1/2" long and 4 3/8" internal diameter. If you think you can make it work we can discuss other specifications and I can send photos. I have all the stainless you need to build a heel plate because I was going to do that but never got round to it.
I have a professionaly built bobstay fitting too but you probably already have that.
kind regards,

Send a message via Skype™ to Mermaid cutter
I have a cranse iron ; two inches long; three and half inches in diameter; heavy guage quarter inch thick stainless. Will this work for your application?

Hi Ed,

That sounds like the same cranse iron that I have currently and I believe that the heel is taken care of now also.
Thanks, though - I appreciate your response.
