Re: Weather Routing

Folks, thank you for answering my previous posts. Life got in the way and only now I had the time to check here again. Quick question in creating your Polar file manually:

Just write down the True Wind speed and direction.
Check the angle with the current heading (or COG?).
Then just fill in the columns in a TWA/TWS polar file with the SOG/Speedometer.

Is this a correct procedure?

Re: Weather Routing

Or perhaps create you polars more automatically, recording using VDR good times where there is little to no current over a.range of headings and wind speeds. Teying to get longer runs of data so the average is reasonably accurate. These recordings should be done at similar sea states. Then do more recordings for calm of flat seas, chop, medium and high seas.

Then use polar_pi to turn them into polars and label approprately with sail sets, sea state, etc.

You can also use polar pi to record directly.

Read the manuals.WR, vdr, polar!!

Re: Weather Routing

Is there a subscription service (besides PredictWind) that allows for the downloading of high resolution ECMWF grib files?

Re: Weather Routing

Try using opencpn grib_pi with saildocs and pick ecmwf and up to .25 or .5 degrees.

Thank you. I’m trying to find a way to dump the expense of predict wind but the access to 9km ECMWF resolution is hard to leave.

Consider that the software has interpretation of the grib intervals

Re: Weather Routing

Good evening,

Has anyone noticed the grib file extraction for wave period & direciton is using the incorrect value? The cursor value shows WavePeriod (yellow) and WaveDirection (orange) when in keeping with the significant wave height value, Primary Wave Period (blue) and Primary Wave Direction (purple) should be used. If I could write code I'd offer a fix myself but wanted to bring it to the grib group's attention.

Thank you

Please note that this has nothing to do with weather_routing. It is grib_pi!!

Can you please attach the grib file that you used for this?

Or at least be more specific about where you got the file and provide a link?

Re: Weather Routing

Hi yes, I understand your plug in has nothing to do with the embedded grib plug in for the app. I couldn't find where to reach the app author(s) so I just stumbled onto this group and thought I'd start a conversation.

To populate the grib fields I use ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov /pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/v16.3/gfs.20230915/12/wave/gridded with the respective date/time for the most recent run cycle. I use the Atlantic Ocean 0.16 degree resolution.

Thanks for the reply,
Craig

Weather Routing

I'm using a RPI and was going to try the Weather Routing Plugin going between Fiji & New Zealand. I'm getting an error related to the climatology version. Any thoughts. Thanks for any help

Re: Weather Routing

Weather routing has climatology version file checking which I thought was disabled now, but was necessary when we had upgraded the format some time ago. Now we've exceeded the maximum value and it needs to be increased and recompiled. I hope Dave @bdbcat can increase the max version number and recompile and deploy for you as I am away right now. Sorry about that. You could try running an earlier version of climatology which would work.

Thanks for the prompt response. I’m waiting out a weather window now. Might be a week or so. I’ll keep an eye out.

Re: Weather Routing

Find the earlier tarball of your OS here, download and install using "import Plugin" https://cloudsmith.io/~opencpn/repos...prod/packages/
