Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

As shown in the screen capture below, some tide stations are showing meters, some feet, and some both. When both are shown it's pretty well impossible to read either because of how they overlap. Is there a setting to fix this or is it a bug?

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

I have the same issue. (I've ignored it for past year after trying to fix.)

Perhaps because we are in Canada?

Not so much where we are as where the tide station is!

Yes, so far, I haven't found any tide stations in the U.S. that do this. They're all in feet. At first, I thought it was only tide stations that are close to the border on the Canadian side that do it. But I've found tide stations pretty far from the border that also do it.

Changing the units setting doesn't fix it, but I expect you've already tried that.

I'll put in a bug report when I figure out how.

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

I don't care so much whether feet or meters, but it's the overlaping display of both that is a visual pain (such as in your screenshot on outside/East side of Porlier Pass).

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

Hello...
Is this question of duplicated tide station levels still present in OCPN 5.8.2?
I cannot reproduce at the location shown in the screenshot...

Thanks
Dave

I can reproduce and confirmed it is all within the same tide database, with 5.8.2. Probably not fixable unless someone wants to go in and muck with the database. It is NOT being caused by extra tide databases (my first thought). See screen shots.

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

It is a case of double stations data.
HARMONICS_NO_US.IDX line 1996
HARMONICS_NO_US line 416789 in feet

HARMONICS_NO_US.IDX line 1997
HARMONICS_NO_US line 41672 in meters
Same station name Porlier Pass, British Columbia
Same station name Porlier Pass, British Columbia (2)

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

Sherry...
What I am not seeing on O582 is the "scrambled overwriting" of tide height as in the OP's first screenshot. Theoretically, this duplicate station overdraw is present in O580, but was corrected in O582. We need to confirm that.

Duplicate stations in the database with different units is another related issue.

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

Dave, this station data Porlier Pass is in double. If you look on the CHS tide stations it is Porlier Pass 07437 and also Dionisio Point 07535 both by Galiano Island B.C. The observation data were based on march 7, 1968 till april 11, 1968. You could also seach for their annual predictions.
If you do remove the one in feet in the HARMONICS_NO_US.IDX line 1996
It should be left with the meters.
Then remove the line
HARMONICS_NO_US line 416789 in feet and data related.

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

There are many (perhaps the majority!) tide stations in BC where two numbers overlap and thus unreadable (until clicked on).

I wouldn't be surprised if this is due to wrong or multiple harmonic files. I tried but couldn't figure out how to get these right. (My fault or is OPENCPN confusing on this matter...?) In general, because of this I use other tide programs and anyways, always double check with official CHS tides.

Sorry, I do not know status in 5.8.2 (I tried 5.8.2 but had to uninstall as display went wonky/unreadable.)

Pelagia...
What exact version of OCPN are using that shows garbled tide heights?
According to our build logs, this was corrected in OCPN v5.8.0.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Some tide stations showing both feet and meters

P_Dub....
As noted above, there are many duplicate tide stations in the WA/BC area. These will not be removed for upcoming 5.8 service release. We will wait for the next major release of OCPN to fully address all tide harmonic data.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks Dave.

OK, to give you a proper answer, I had to startup my old laptop and install 5.82.

Old laptop: Win7

(I am holding back on installing 5.82 on my ship computer/good laptop, as when I tried this a couple weeks ago, I encountered problems with display of charts going odd - - they shudder (jig?) rapidly up and down. This is a relatively new Dell Win10 laptop. )

The problems I was having with tides was on 5.62: (i) meters and feet overlapping and thus display garbled, and (ii) some tides are in feet and some are in meters.

Updating (old computer) to 5.82 solved the garbled tide issue. However, there are still some tide stations in feet with others in meters.

As an aside, I copied the files in the 5.82 tcd folder (old computer) and used them to replace the tcd files in 5.62 on my good computer. This solved some of the overlapping (garbled) tides.

Sorry, I realize you are now on to 5.82 and beyond, so are not interested in 5.62. I understand this, hence I haven't brought it up.

Nevertheless, the garbled tide (overlapping #s) issue remains very much an issue on my up-to-date Android OpenCPN.

(I've only looked at Canadian tides.)

"Nevertheless, the garbled tide (overlapping #s) issue remains very much an issue on my up-to-date Android OpenCPN."

OCPN 5.8.4 (for Android) is under development now, expected in a few weeks. It includes the garbled tide text correction, among other things.

Thanks
