Ships icon fluctuating

Hi, is there a setting ie: dampening, that can stop my ships icon ffrom doing circles, flickering from side to side every say 5sec?

Re: Ships icon fluctuating

Rod,

any chance you have more than one input for position information? For instance the AIS provides position information, do you also have a GPS connected as a separate device? Having two (or) more devices providing position information can cause the behavior you have described.

If the answer is yes there are two options, both in Options|Connections:
  1. Set Priority - Each connection has a priority setting, if you get the same information from multiple sources having different priorities should allow the system to ignore one while the other is present, and then automatically switch to the other when needed. However, IME this isn't as seamless as it should be. I suspect, but absolutely do not know, that it is based on the information being in the same NMEA sentences, and since position can be in so many different sentences it can fail - my supposition without investigation.
  2. Ignore Sentences - You can set one connection to ignore the position sentences. Use the NMEA debug window to see which sentences are being received and then ignore the position data from one source.

If it isn't multiple sources then you may want to post some sample material here from the NMEA Debug window.

Thanks for the replied info, yes I do have a second input, AIS, which was also set at priority 1 as was the GPS, I've changed the AIS to priority 2 so we'll see how it goes.

Kind regards
Rod.

That won't work. Setting Priority only works with equal nmea sentences. And from your AIS there is an !AIVDO sentece and from your GPS a $GPRMC or simular.
So in your case you should block (filter) one of the inputs. !AIVDO is likely to be the easyest, as your GPS might sen more then one sentence providing a position.

I vote for a complete rework of GPS functions in OpenCPN. They are actually outdated because we do not have only the old US GPS but also Glonass, Baidou, Galileo and also receivers which provide a mix of these systems. Furthermore modern receivers provide not only 1 Hz but also 10 Hz.

Rooiedirk how do I block (filter) AIVDO sentance? I can't seem to find it, is it the debug window? After changing the priority of the ais to 2 I no longer have any error sentences in the debug Window

AIVDO is the "ownship" sentence. It contains position information. My own AIS does not send one, it sends RMC and a GG? (there are a couple). Don't know why, some programmer's selection. You can confirm in the NMEA Debug window.

Removing it is under Options|Connections. For each connection you can filter sentences by checking either the "Accept only sentences" or the "Ignore sentences" option, then put the sentence names in the filter box below (if the filter box is empty then this is ignored). You can use the ellipsis (...) to the right of the filter box to get a list of sentences.

This is easiest if you run the debug window, then you can see what sentences you are receiving and accept/ignore those you want to filter.

Re: Ships icon fluctuating

Well setting the priorities ie: AIS to no.2 seems to have worked, it's now super smooth, I'm happy.

Sounds like you need a heading sensor.

I run AIS on one gps puck
And have another GPS puck plugged into USB to PC.

Simple solution when running AIS is to unplug USB GPS.
When parked I turn AIS off and if still wanting GPS and opencpn simply plug USB back in.
