Playback / Replay OpenCPN or similar help?

Hello there,
so I have a file with GPX-data from one of my trips with following information:
Date / time
Long / Lat
Course
Speed

And I'm looking for a way to replay my GPX data in a proper way. Do you know Marinetraffic or Vesselfinder? They also have an option replaying tracks of vessels. I'm looking for a software that does provide a similar view. I want that course and speed are also included.

Of course I tried OpenCPN but wasn't happy with the result. It showed my track, yes, but I have no option of "replaying" it. And I know that this is not what OpenCPN is made for.

Do you have any suggestion for me for software or with this in general? I heard there are also plugins for OpenCPN but I doubt they will work the way I want.

Why don't you install VDR plugin?

it records since the moment you say record until you stop it, and you can replay with the same plugin any file with valid NMEA sentences and the ones you have created.

it records all valid NMEA sentences arriving to your computer.

The VDR plugin will not play back a GPX file. You can import it as a track into OpenCPN and see it, but you can't play it back.

I think you can play it back in Google Earth, but would need to convert it to a KML file first.

I think Shipdriver does read gpx files, but I am not certain....and shows the boat location(s) etc. (It might be worthwhile checking the Shipdriver Manual). Shipdriver also has a mode where you can actually steer and drive the ship around.

ShipDriver cannot read GPX files. It can read and follow a route that is already in route manager. But the speed is not available in a route and it is set manually.

Oog87 ... could you send/post a sample of a GPX file you would like to replay? Perhaps the facility could be added to ShipDriver in the future.

Maybe with a little time investment you could do a formulation in Excel to convert the GPX file into valid NMEA sentence and exporting it to a .txt file.
I guess that should be enough the $ECRMC sentence.

the only I see is how to do a proper calculation of the NMEA sentence checksum, for sure that here will know how to calculate.

after that you can reproduce with VDR plugin

there is an utility that loads GPX files and could convert to some other formats, maybe you can play and do something like I told in my previous post converting from GPX to coma separate file and after that to NMEA .txt stream as RMC sentence.

Thanks Mike, for correcting me. Corsair's suggestions to convert gpx to nmea0183 sentences readable by VDR are good too.

How about converting your .gpx file into JSON? There are several converters available on-line.

Having got your data into JSON, you could use the JavaScript plugin to read the file and parse it into a JavaScript object. That is just one line.

data = JSON.parse(jsonString);

Then you can push out the required NMEA0183 sentences. The plug-in takes care of generating the checksum for you.

It’s very doable this way.

There are examples of working with NMEA0183 data in the plug-in User Guide and in the library of sample scripts.
