Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Didn't OpenCPN show you that there now is another interface available on the computer 176.16.1.1 ?

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hello

Finaly got the small Acer computer dialed into the Garmin HD 18 last week, works fine.

But now i have another problem, my Gradar on my Dedicated Nav Computer quit working yesterday, it worked fine the daybefore, worked fine for over a year.

When i start the open Cpn, the Radar icon stays red, even with the amphernol switch on, even when in Master mode. i have restarted the Computer, and Restarted the open CPN program Seveal times, to no avail. I bypassed the Amphernol Switch, and went Direct to the Computer this morning with the ethernet cable, with the same nothing results. Checked the IP address several times, they have not changed from when it was working before
Checked Radar log, nothing but GPS Data, nothing about the Radar.

I am thinking it might be the Scanner itself

any ideas appreciated

Thanks

I don't think you should bypass the Amphenol Switch. Pin 5 of the Ethernet cable must be grounded to start the scanner.

Maybe a stupid question but here goes anyway.
Have you checked so that you have power to the scanner i.e. 12 V ?

If that is so maybe you could download Wireshark to check if the scanner sends any data on the Ethernet cable.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Another simple test:

The Garmin scanner makes a distinctive "motoring" sound when the array is spinning.

Do you hear this? If not, check the power wiring and pin 5 on the data cable interface.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Thanks Dave

I did check for noise in the Scanner, and nothing. I will chase wires tomorrow
and check for power. I assume that there is a Hot solder joint on the Amphenol switch that i can get a + reading on a meter.
One thing that did happen a couple of times this am, when i was rebooting at several different times the the Radar icon would go into a normal spinup, count down but stop at 6 and crash, it did this just a couple of times. Most of the time the radar icon would just show red. Im pretty positive it is a Mechanical issue or wiring. because it does it with my backup computer also.
what i will probably end up doing is taking the scanner down and Jumper it with another ethernet cable to make sure the Cable has not opened up and has water in it. I did check the connection into the scanner itself and it felt secure.

Thanks Dave

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hello

I checked power, and Wiring. I got power to the Scanner,
I disconnected everything and brought it home to my Shop and hooked it up as i had it on the Boat when it was working fine a couple of days ago. Can not make it come alive. Though when i try and get it into Master Mode, Window comes up and says.

Scanner is located at 172.16.2.0
Interface on Computer is 127.0.0.1/8

ideas welcome

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

On what interface is your scanner connected ?
I see no interface with a cable plugged in.
I suppose it should be the Realtek, but here the red X indicates no cable present.
To verify the NIC is ok you can connect it to switch. The red X should then disappear.
There is definitely no data coming in to the plug-in. You seem to have only the loop back interface.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hello

Called Garmin Warranty Mar 22, 2 Rings and a Real Live Person answered, was stunned, was expecting to listen to music,
was impressed, usually get the Run a Round on Warranty work in the Past.
Said send it down since it was under 2 years warranty. Gave me a RAN number and i shipped it. Had to pay shipping down, but that was ok , I got it back already. Modulator Board was bad, they updated the software also. at no charge. They bench tested it also. Have not hooked it up yet, but will this weekend.
Really impressed with Garmins Service.

rontom...

Did you mention to Garmin folks that you plan to use the scanner with OpenCPN? Any raised eyebrows there?

Just wondering....

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hello Dave
I am trying to install Radar plugin, do I need an own sip position from GPS or NMEA device before OPENCPN will produce a RADAR scan. I can see that I am talking to the scanner ok from the log files but I get no Radar scan, I am not connected to a GPS.
Kind Regards

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Yes, you need a positioning system (and heading, either to the radar or to OpenCPN.)

Otherwise the system does not know where to center the radar overlay or how much to rotate the image on screen.

If you use the latest version you should see a dialog that shows you a number of items that need to be satisfied before it will show the image.

Below you see a dialog that shows you what happens on my system when not connected to a positioning system (and an actual radar!)
