Re: OpenCPN General

I have a new MacBook Air and have been using OCPN on limited basis. Seems to work great.

My issue is that will be going to Pacific Mexico in fall. Where the heck do I find charts for that area that I can use with this program?

I have existing Mexican charts I use with Nobeltec PC program. These charts do not work with OCPN.

Suggestion would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Gary..

If you want to use an Android tablet (I use Samsung 10.1 tablet) I can recommend the free OruxMaps nav. app. It uses converted (quickly using OruxMaps Desktop) .kap maps and have a lot of other good features. Reads both wind and stream information using .kml files created by qtVlm Route Enhancement etc.

TeamViewer is a good program to view OpenCPN to a tablet pairing it to your laptop, and works over wifi.

Re: OpenCPN General

Just downloaded CM93 March 2011 from a site liked by buccaneers or a related one. It works well but seems to be missing good detail around parts of the Ionian Islands where I am currently at. Any suggestion about improving the data or finding another source?

My suggestion

Go looking on torrent feeds like pirate bay there is usually a fairly complete CM93 R2 iso to be found.

Only issue I have seen is that you might need to merge the DVD iso contents onto the HDD in a single directory you run your Open CPN charts to get all the detail to flesh out reliably no matter where you go in the world. leaving the data in separate regions seems to suffer as you say from missing detail otherwise.

There are some boundary merging issues overlaying the chart set on high zoom / over zoom but in practical sailing terms usage I have personally not seen anywhere that the one from the torrent would not allow you to navigate anywhere in a pinch. Only caveat as always is making allowance for shifting banks due to tide and erosion. I have a set of local Navionics charts that I have done a cross comparison on including the usual routes on the East and West Coasts of the USA Incl Panama and it seemed to me to be very comparable.

Good Luck with your quest and if you find anything more detailed in open source let us know

dlymn..

You can of course also create detailed .kap maps using GE2KAP and Google Earth.
No printed soundings but shallows and reefs are normally detectible.

More info: Greece Ionian islands

You can download the POI file of Greece and Turkey and install to the layers area of OpenCPN: https://drive.google.com/folderview?...lE&usp=sharing

Which means: empty map

Re: OpenCPN General

Dave..

Tested the European tidal stream grib1 format with OpenCPN but had to re-name it to .grb
BUT, it does not show any stream value, only direction??

Quote:
Hello Tore,

Opencpn showed the file even name .grb1. Arrows of uniform size, colors indicating strength of the current.
The Routing program grib routines are essentially zygrib, which does not read the format , for unknown reasons. Zygrib does not read the BSH data as provided until December 2012.
Might be a parameter problem or a problem with the timestep being not hours but minutes.

Re: OpenCPN General

Please note.... Both OpenCPN AND qtVlm are displaying the old format stream .grb correctly.

Hi again Kai..

I just tested one of your old stream .grib files from your archive with OpenCPN and it worked perfectly displaying arrows as well as direction and speed in the provided boxes.

Perhaps the converted grib2 files have a different format than the old .grb files?

Re: OpenCPN General

Hello
I have just downloaded Open CPN 3.2 on to my Home Computer to get familiar with it before i put it on the computer on the Boat, and there is a Bell ringing in the background, It does not Ring when i go to the Options Window, i have found nothing in the options that would cause any ringing. Is this a normal part of the new program, also my computer Shows the new Program as 96 Megs of space, i was under the impression that the New program was less than that.

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN General

You should probably read thru the manual.

Under options>user interface>there is a "play ships bells" checkbox. This is could be the source of the bells. Uncheck.
