opencpn 5.0.0 now in Debian

Hi,

Version 5.0.0 is now in Debian sid [1]. It is available in said branch, and will eventually hit Debian 11 (Bullseye). If I get this right (please correct me...) it means that it will also be part of Ubuntu focal in April 2020.

The official package is built against gtk3. This means that many plugins needs to be recompiled to work. Then again, this is necessary anyway since Debian is dropping the wxgtk2 support.

Enjoy

Alec,

a milestone. And we only can imagine the effort required to make this fly!

Good start into 2020...

I have no such plans, please feel free to make it. FWIW, even if it's possible to create a backport based on wxgtk2 I'd advice against it.

i wonder how this will collide with ppa packages, as the ppa's packages have a different structure

The linux plugin situation will be probably be worse before it gets better. We have an inevitable wxgtk2 -> wxgtk3 transition, new plugin locations etc. However, the plugin location is /usr/lib/opencpn which shouldn't be that bad.

I'm a linux (mostly fedora) user myself. Even so, I think that it will not be possible to support the diversified linux echosystem over time. In master we (currently Dave) are working on new strategy where one of the goals is a better linux support:
  • Focusing on Debian (mostly for Rpi and friends) and Flatpak which should work on all linux regular desktops
  • Creating a plugin downloader/installer, partly to avoid the need to package plugins on Fedora, Debian, Arch, Gentoo and what not.
