OpenCPN 4.2 crashes on two machines and won't run, even with reinstall

I just installed 4.2 (I've been using OpenCPN for several years). On one machine it went down while installing charts. Occasional crashes are not unusual, so I went to my helm machine to install it and it crashed hard. Now when I click on the shortcut, or the exe, I get "Crash Report Delivery Module has stopped working." and a "Problem signature" (below)/

I rebooted, same thing. I reinstalled 4.2, same thing. Help!

Both machines are running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

Jim

Jim...
Go to C:\ProgramData and rename the folder opencpn to opencpn.bak, then start OpenCPN. If it helps, we would much like to see the contents of opencpn.bak.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2 crashes on two machines and won't run, even with reinstall

OK, I did that -- changed the name of the folder to C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak.

Clicked on shortcut, and I get a message box titled "crInstall error, Crash Reporting disabled" with the message "Couldn't create crash report directory."

Clicked on OK button and got a second message box "OpenCPN Error" , "Directory 'C:\ProgramData\ opencpn\CrashReports' couldn't be created (error 3:the system cannot find the path specified.)
Clicked on the second OK button and got the "Welcome to OpenCPN.. Version 4.2.0" message box with (I think) the standard disclaimer.

Clicked on that OK button and the program started, without any charts loaded, presumably because they are in the folder which is now OpenCPN.bak. I loaded a chart directory and everything seems to be working fine. As you probably know, but I report for completeness, there is now a new folder "C:\ProgramData\ opencpn" with four files:
CHRTLIST.DAT
navobj.xml
opencpn.ini
opencpn.log

OK, you say "If it helps, we would much like to see the contents of opencpn.bak." That's fine, but in what detail? There are eight folders and twelve files.

"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml.1"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml.2"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml.3"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml.4"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml.5"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\navobj.xml.changes "
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\opencpn.ini"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\opencpn.log"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\opencpn.log.log"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\CHRTLIST.DAT"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\MMSINAME.CSV"

"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\Charts"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\CrashReports"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\gshhs"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\gshhs standard"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\layers"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\SENC"
"C:\ProgramData\opencpn.bak\UserIcons"

The Charts, layers, and UserIcons folders appear to have nothing odd in them. "gshhs standard" is a backup -- I use the high res map. I've never noticed the CSV before -- it appears to be a list of all the name/MMSI numbers the system has seen -- I assume that allows the system to put a name on an MMSI number before it's actually "heard" over the radio.

Jim...
Could you please ZIP the contents of opencpn.bak and share it on Dropbox or similar service and send me the link via PM so that I can try to reproduce the crash?

OK. I'll send you the link in a minute. Sorry it took so long, but even after removing two gigs of charts and the high rez map from the folder, it's still 200MB zipped.

"Due to abuse by spammers, new members are not allowed to send links in their private messages until they have become trusted members."

I've been a member here for two years more or less, albeit not very active. How do I do this?

Or, you can send me a private message -- go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Jameslwoodward and click on "Email this user" in the left column.
