Lost AIS

Hi,

To my knowledge, I have not changed any of the filter settings that Hakan gave me months ago. However, no AIS targets are showing up (possibly coincidentally, my Navico Radar is also missing) on the screen, nor on the list.
This is on a Win 10 laptop with OpenCPN v 5.2.4. I'm using the Vesper XB8000 to send and receive class B signals.

I also have the Coastal Explorer program and it can see all the boats with AIS.

It is totally mystifying that I can suddenly lose both AIS and Radar images at the same time (posted separately), and I try to keep far away from any internal tweaking of this wonderful program.

I'm attaching files. Com 3 is depth (possibly also GPS) from a Garmin. Com 4 is the Vesper with AIS and I think GPS. Com 5 should be output to the Autopilot.

Thanks for any ideas.

Armand

Re: Lost AIS

From your screenshots it seems there are no AIS messages received at all, there is not a single AIVDM or AIVDO message.
Also all the screenshots you attached show data only coming on COM5, nothing on COM3 or COM4.

Before you continue looking for a possibly non-existent problem, make sure you don't have multiple applications trying to use the ports at the same time and that you actually have display of the AIS targets turned on:

Re: Lost AIS

Nohal,
Solid ideas. and lovely graphic!

I'm sure there is nothing else using the ports. Whenever I verify that the AIS is still there with the other program, Coastal Explorer, I always do a restart. I understand that I may be missing something obvious...to others.

I may have given bad information on which port was supposed to do what. Sorry, as my understanding was flawed. I just don't understand the NEMA signals like I need too. I will again try to understand the manual.

I did make a shot of the control panel. Not much additional info for you.

Thanks,

Armand

Re: Lost AIS

I take it from your configuration that AIS should be on COM4 (only one set to 38400 baud). What kind of device is on COM4? USB? And if you go into Coastal Explorer, what are the COM port settings there?

I don’t see any COM3 either. With the baud rates set differently if they are swapped (Windows can do that depending on what type of device is used) you wouldn’t get data from either one. A quick test would be to exchange the settings between COM3 and COM4, but that would depend on what Coastal Explorer is using. If it is using COM4 then this is not the problem, but if it has some kind of “auto find” function it may work when O doesn’t.
