Re: Linux, OpenCpn 4.4 + Draw 1.2

Bernard,
This issue has been reported by others in this forum, but it is not related to the OD plugin, as far as I can tell, although that is where you have experienced it. I get the same issue with and without the OD plugin being installed. It appears to have started a little while ago, possibly just after OCPN 4.2. I think the issue is a timing one as it does not always occur. I cannot look into it currently as I am on the boat and don't have access to my test systems.

Regards
Jon

Start two times OCPN, then stop the first one. The second OCPN will work without the spinwheel.

What an interesting workaround. What do you think it tells us about the problem?

jean, et al...

I am looking into the "spinning wheel" problem on O4.4.

It seems difficult to reproduce reliably.
Does anyone have an idea of what conditions tend to provoke this behaviour?
Platform? Raster charts? ENCs? cm93? Any particular dialogs that are or have been active?

Thanks
Dave

Re: Linux, OpenCpn 4.4 + Draw 1.2

Dave,
I cannot reproduce the issue reliably, but once it starts happening closing and restarting OCPN does not seem to resolve the issue. I have noticed that it 'seems' to start when the plugins are being loaded on initial startup. So the pointer looks OK until the main toolbar is being populated with the plugin icons, then the spinning wheel shows, it also 'seems' to happen when the charts are being initialised/reinitialised, i.e. when s63 is loading during plugin startup. I am not saying s63 is the issue, but it is, for me, around this time that I get the issue.

I have tried with OD enabled and disabled, but this does not make a difference, so I don't think it is this plugin. I think it is a timing issue which is why it is hard to pin down. It sort of appears to be the use of a true/false global flag instead of a counter, so two operations are setting then unsetting the spinning wheel but are leaving the 'flag' in the wrong state. This is pure conjecture though.

Re: Linux, OpenCpn 4.4 + Draw 1.2

Opencpn.ini changes perhaps?
Does a fresh opencpn.ini fix it?
Perhaps a plugin doesn't complete something in opencpn.ini and so it is always expecting it? Hence spinning...

Why would a double start stop the spinning though?

Would the problem show something in the log file?

For me it happens when I try to display ENCs. As long as I don't try to view an ENC everything's fine. Once I try to show an ENC the spinning pinwheel won't go away until I shut down the program. It has nothing to do with Draw on my system.

After some tests (Linux Mint), it appears that I get the spin wheel in two cases :
- with the draw PI activated
- without any PI when I move very quickly the chart (CM93) with the mouse.

Re: Linux, OpenCpn 4.4 + Draw 1.2

I just experienced and resolved this issue on Mint 17.3. Here is what i experienced.

Some time ago I added North Atlantic pilot charts (central and west). This lead to poor performance. I am a casual user with little experience and I did not know about chart groups. As a result I had the All Charts group only, and I have the complete US east and gulf coasts in both raster and ENC charts. When I added pilot charts the program got too scatterbrained to figure it out.

Recently I removed the pilot charts, which improved the performance back to something usable, but then I had the spinning cursor.

Today I wanted to look at pilot charts again, so I went to the manual to see if I could load just those, and I learned about chart groups. So I created groups for raster, ENC, Pilot West and Pilot central. Performance and usability both improved significantly, but I still had the spinner.

I came to this thread (still OpenCPN still running in the session where I created the groups) and wondered it the hint someone gave about ENC charts might affect me. So I restarted, and bang, everything works great and no spinner. I can activate any of the chart groups (including ENC) without getting the spinner.

Thinking maybe it was an excessive amount of charts that caused the original problem, I thought I should try activating All Charts again. Did so, still no problem. Also the performance is much better than I was seeing the first time I tried to use all these charts together.

So, I thought, "maybe it is because it started with all charts". So I left all charts selected, stopped and started. Everything still fine.

Those are the facts. Here is my speculation. I think something got funky with the chart database, and a side effect of my removing the pilot charts and re-adding them, or of my addition of chart groups, or of the database rebuilds I did during all this somehow fixed the problems.

Suggestion to those that still have the problem. Try removing and re-adding your chart libraries. Maybe it will help.

Re: Linux, OpenCpn 4.4 + Draw 1.2

No spinning wheel but I thought from memory last time I tried draw,

that when I was adding a point in a boundary, close to an existing waypoint, that a window opened asking if I would like to use that existing waypoint.

I no longer see that feature.
What have I changed?
Ubuntu 16.04
Open 4.4.0
Draw 1.2

Re: Linux, OpenCpn 4.4 + Draw 1.2

Hi Redog,
I have fixed the issue you raised about existing OD Points. The fix is in OD 1.3.26 so the next binary will contain this. I have not retro fitted it to OD 1.2 as that is now stabilised (I hope) and I am only fixing crashes if they occur. I am working on OD 1.4, hence the beta version 1.3.xx.

Regards
Jon
