Internet AIS feed for OpenCPN via Boat Beacon

I wrote the Boat Beacon internet AIS app for Android and iPhone after a near miss with a dredger. It uses live real time AIS feeds from around the world, many of the receivers and aerials I have paid for myself, other feeds are kindly provided by volunteers. The coverage is pretty good around the coasts world-wide.

I was wondering if there would be any interest from the OpenCPN users out there for a live internet NMEA AIS feed via my app? Boat Beacon could provide a local UDP or TCP port for OpenCPN to connect to (just as you would for an AIS over WiFi or lan cable). Boat Beacon itself will be getting the AIS data from my server and then relaying it over TCP/UDP to OpenCPN.

Just a thought. Hopefully I will not be shot down in flames for suggesting this.....

Sadly most boats have no internet connection at sea. So your software might be useless...

Sarita,

in case you provide an IP with the NMEA stream any interested user of OCPN would just be able to connect. One more source for instance for test data.
Always good. Just publish the address : port and here we go.

Without hiding my worries about the "live"-AIS streams. For some reason all and every stream or web page provider of AIS states that there is no - zero - guarantee about data delays. You might even find intentionally delays or filtering.
I'm a happy user of vesselfinder.com and marinetraffic.com - at home - but would be very skeptical using these sources for navigation.

Has been discussed several times here and in other fori.

+1
Marinetraffic et al can be very useful at times if no live ais is available, like looking if any ships are leaving port etc. But having watched both live and net side by side with at times a 1 mile difference in positions , using Web based ais for collision avoidance really isn't a good idea.

Some might not think it legit data, but we have used cell phone ais for the fast ferry during fog and found it good. I am wholeheartedly in support.
Additionally some opencpn users on bigger boats might agree to be stations contributing location?
