Import GPX on Android

Greetings,

The import GPX (tracks waypoints, etc) does is restricted to /storage/emulated/0/data/.....opencpn/files, which is a symlink and does not allow copying of .gpx files to a directory where import gpx can navigate, e.g. it is restricted file system, as the tablet is not rooted.
Could i be directed to a method to copy gpx files to a directory where the import gpx function can copy from? thank you

trying to import GulfStream.gpx coord file to dislay.

thank you!

Mark...

The simplest and most reliable method of moving an arbitrary file to "/storage/emulated/0/data/.....opencpn/files" is to connect the device to a Windows PC by USB cable, and do your file management chores from the PC.

Re: Import GPX on Android

Alternatively, download a better File Manager for Android that allows you to access ALL folders, including OpenCPN folder in Android.

I use FileManager+, but there are others too.

No longer have any issues.

Re: Import GPX on Android

I'm also lost. Yesterday (and this morning) I spent hours trying to figure out how to get OpenCPN to access my routes, tracks and waypoints I brought over to MyFiles from my PC. I am trying to set up this ChromeBook as a backup. Any help or detailed instructions would be very helpful. I am feeling like a total dunce here.
Based on sv Pelagia's recommendation I downloaded File Manager Plus' version of FileManger, but I just don't know what I am doing and don't see any help keys.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Import GPX on Android

Thank you! both for replying. I will try the file manager listed; i did try one other and terminal emulator for linux commands, but the sd card ... /android/data has no read write access.

I do not have access to laptop or other device now. Seems that android 11 has denied access to sd card .. /android on android

Again, thank you!

Re: Import GPX on Android

Using appropriate FileManage, Copy/Move gpx file to:
Android\data\org.opencpn.opencpn\files

In OpenCpn: open waypoint manager... Import file... the gpx file should be visible

Above worked for me. However, my opencpn niw is able to get gpx files from other folders such as "Downloads". So using Filemanager+ not always required. (No idea why this became even easier.)

the device being used with OpenCpn 5.8.4[104] is android 13, and this may be the issue, as i have seen other application complaints regarding no access to sd - card android.../data

You cannot acces SD card via OpenCPN on current android.

I run Android 13 and most current Android OpenCPN (5.8.4, Dave Register) on one of my Androids.

Outside of OpenCPN, NO problem accessing SD card using FileManager+. Then transfer to appropriate directory (I listed above) then import into OpenCPN. .

Same thing with my other system running Android 12.

Re: Import GPX on Android

There have been some changes in the last few Android releases which prevent some (most?) apps from accessing just about anything except their own "playpen" data storage location.

This is absolutely stupid for anything which uses shared data. Certainly GPX files are in that category, as are any charts you've downloaded in standard formats. Why should each app store duplicate copies?

With most file managers, you can navigate to any directory, select a file and select "open with" to get a list of apps which support that format. I don't know why OpenCPN isn't on that list. Other charting apps are.

Re: Import GPX on Android

Thank you! for replying, really appreciate the beta from good! forum members.

I used several file managers, including filemanager + (great app) and all navigate to the /.....data/opencpn directory but fail with "permission denied @ android ver." when selcting the directory to copy to. It as discussed above is an android ver spin issue, as i have seen mention of the problem on apk dev sites.

Really appreciate you guys, mark

n.b. i have the lat, long of Gulf Stream walls and will plot on chart where needed.

many thanks

Re: Import GPX on Android

Thank you, and yes i wish i could do the same, but the file manager(s) throw an error on my android referencing android directory permissions; i am able to upload the gpx files to another nav app wich allows for browse uploads, i.e. upload from directorys other that android app and data, but it is inferior to OpenCpn (D.Register).

Im glad it works for others, Im okay with it will just add a couple lat, long points when needed.

Thank you again, for all replys, so helpful!

Re: Import GPX on Android

Another option is to save any gpx files you want to import into their own directory and use "migrate charts" in opencpn charts tab to copy that directory to the opencpn android file location.
