GPS antenna issue

Although my USB GPS antenna appears to be properly installed (correct port, correct baud rate (9600)), etc. the boat icon does not appear nor does OpenCPN show I'm receiving a GPS signal. I know the antenna works because I have an older computer with OpenCPN as well and I have no trouble getting a good signal and seeing the boat icon on that computer. I know the port is live on the newer computer as my GPS antenna has a small red light indicating it is receiving power. Thoughts? Things to try? Thanks in advance.

Re: GPS antenna issue

Larry
Open options->Connections.

Click [ ] Show NMEA Debug Window
If data is flowing pause it and look for "$--RMC like this:
$GPRMC,,A,5738.0239,N,1144.6882,E,9.700,119.177,23 0394,,W*76<0x0D>
If you see a --RMC is there a position? If not move the antenna outside.

If nothing is received:
Check so you connection is enabled.
Try different baud rates
Check the PC's Device manager so you really get a proper COM-port when connecting the USB.

Re: GPS antenna issue

If his GPS puck works with one PC and the other PC not it might be he has not installed the correct driver on the other PC for his GPS puck. Power at the GPS puck does not mean it is sending data.

Re: GPS antenna issue

Thanks so much for your responses.

When I open the NMEA Debug Window there is no activity. The antenna puck is outside with a clear view of the sky and works fine in my old computer in that position. I double-checked and the connection shows enabled. I have tried different baud rates with no success. I believe 9600 is the correct setting but I've tried others.

Some other possible helpful information:
When I go to device manager I notice that the driver for the old computer (the one that works) is different from the driver for the new computer. The new computer is using a newer driver and I'm not sure the old driver still exists. Also, the Com Port display is different on the two computers even though they are both running Windows 10. My old computer shows Ports (COM and LPT) and shows the puck to be in Com 5 which is enabled and works. The new computer displays ports differently. The antenna is listed under Sensors. It shows the puck at Port_#0003. Hub_#0002. In addition, when checking Properties, General both computers show "This device is working properly." Hope that helps. Again, thanks in advance.

Re: GPS antenna issue

You do need the puck to show up in device manager as a serial COM port. There would be a manual or similar for the puck how to do that.
Otherwise copy the driver from the other PC and use it on the new one by the device manager "update driver"

Re: GPS antenna issue

Perhaps uninstall the device. Reboot and let the pc find the GPS and install a driver.

Re: GPS antenna issue

Success!! Thanks to all for your help. I uninstalled the puck, then re-installed it. During the re-installation process the puck was assigned to serial COM port 5. As soon as I enabled COM 5 the puck began to receive data and my ship icon appeared. You guys are awesome! Thanks again.
