Can't Create a Polar from a 0183 File

Hello, I am just trying the Polar Diagram function for the first time. I have what I believe to be a good file from my B&G H1000 system. In the Polar dialog box I have selected Mode= Data from NMEA and Source=GPS (as I want to use SOG vs Boat Speed).

I click "LOAD", find my file, and click OK. The plot screen on the left goes blank for a second or two, then comes back with no data. The Mode switches from "Data from NMEA" to "Edit manual".

Does anyone have a link or could send me a file that works so I can see what is different from mine? Does the file need a specific extension (I'm running Windows 7)?

Long shot. Try txt or csv at the end of the file.
Attach the file here under advanced by adding .doc to the end or pdf

Larry, Weather_routing should be able to import a recorded 0183nmea file, so should Polar_pi. Also there is a program for Windows call Polauto by Patrick. Look in the manual and do a search.

Thanks. I have clicked on several of the links on that page. Most of them seem to show polar plots, but not how the Opencpn Polar app actually reads in a raw polar file to create a polar plot, or gives an example of a 0183 raw file example that can be used to test the application. But I haven't gone through all the links yet. A good project for a Saturday.

Larry, simply put,

1. Record your wind data and boat speeds and headings with VDR_pi and save the file. Try to record when there is little to no current that will affect readings and make note of sea conditions, boat bottom condition, etc. Sail in varying winds and points of sail, and make note of sails used.


2. Take the files recorded and use them with Polar_pi, which will import the file and create the polars or you can use Polauto.
