Yep. Works very well on practically any tiller steered boat and easily adjusted in its placement to get the right trade-off between force and speed of response.

There are 12 volt gear Motors, on eBay and Amazon. I'm using an old autohelm 3000 motor as that's what I had. basically a 3-inch long 12v motor with planetary gearing the two inch diameter pulley running to an 8 inch diameter pulley. with gear reduction it doesn't take much of a motor to run a wheel pilot autopilot.

Run it from the steam, a cylinder on the tiller and a couple of 12 V solenoid valves?

A lot of us would be very interested in a few details on your steamer.
