Vetus 34 Control Panel Question re: Senders

Hi There,

I have a vetus 34 engine control panel that i would like to use.

I need the senders for the water temp and the oil pressure, does anyone know of the part number for theses, or if an other type of sender can work instead?

I have tried contacting my local vetus people and the parts man is on holidays for the next week of so?

alternatively if you know how i can test the gauges i have to figure out what ohms range the senders need to work in that could help also.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Matthew

Re: Vetus 34 Control Panel Question re: Senders

Gordmay,

Thanks.

You know yesterday i looked at vetus shop, while searching for info, and from this end i could only get to as far as the engine control panel page, now with the link that you send me i can see senders?

Weird,

I read the stuff you sent in the other link too, informative.

Now in your opinion would there be any reason why i should use the original vetus senders over just a normal run of the mill send from an auto parts store so long as i can find ones with ohms values that you state?

Thanks in advance

Matthew

Hey BriarF,

Geez Man im not that lazy (haha) i always try and research prior to asking a question.

First thing i did was search Google, and for some reason all i could get to on there was to the vetus shop page showing control panels but no senders which was weird because GordMay did the same search form his country and got a site showing everything.

Cheers anyway

Matthew

Re: Vetus 34 Control Panel Question re: Senders

Vetus uses VDO Senders with the gauge panels. Temp and Pressure sensors should match the gauge range

Example 80PSI /5 Bar Gauge should have a 5 Bar sender.

Temp sensors are normal 250F/120C an come in various thread styles

VDO makes 2, 5,10 and 30 & 32 bar pressure senders. Also sensors that have a warning contact in the sensor.

The temp or pressure range is stamped on the hex flat (Where you put the wrench) of their senders.

Re: Vetus 34 Control Panel Question re: Senders

Thanks SV Antares

Its amazing how much the internet (and the world) opens up when you actually have a number or code or correct name to search for, and helpful people to ask.

I will scurry of back the the shop now and see if i can find some correct senders.

Most VDO sender/sensors utilize the European resistance values, but (I believe) they do have a line utilizing American values.

If you remove & isolate the sender wire from the gauge (or sensor):
An American gauge will deflect to the Left (Minimum)
A European gauge will deflect to the Right (Maximum)

If you ground the sender wire, the reverse will happen:
An American gauge will deflect to the Right (Maximum)
A European gauge will deflect to the Left (Minimum)

You'll also have to match your engine block orifice thread size & type (metric or NPT).

Re: Vetus 34 Control Panel Question re: Senders

Gordy has it in a nutshell.
What is your base engine?
Yanmar as an example uses for pressure a 1/8 - 28 JSP while others use 1/8-27 NPT . Temp is usually 3/8 npt
Seems so simple but can get tricky.

Basicly there are only 3 wires that count on any gauge. Forget the lighting circut for a moment and you will see that there is:

Ground: shown as - (Neg)
Positive: Shown as + (Pos)
Sender: "G" (Geber or "giver" = VDO, Yup.... German Co ) or S for signal for most others and some VDO

The lighting circut is only + and - .
Step back and draw it out and it is a lot more simple that it appears.

Re: Vetus 34 Control Panel Question re: Senders

Gentlemen,

Thank you.

So far with the information you have given i have managed to test all my vetus gauges, and they work, some need a bit of rough loving so to speak but there all fine.

Even managed to reset my tacho hours back to zero so its now on the same hours as my motor.

Got my alternator wired so it now has an output for the tacho ($30 cheap).

I have even sourced a local supplier of the senders for a reasonable price.

In a day or so when i get my fuel pump back and start my motor i can see if they work.

So, so far it looks like getting a modern deluxe panel to work with my old little yanmar might be a cheap success.

If it all goes to plan, then a loud Whoo Hoo will be heard.

Only issue i can see is calibrating the tacho which will now run of the alternator and making it somewhat correct against the rpm of the engine.

It does have a little adjustment screw on the back, and i believe that i know someone who has a timing light sort of thing to shoot my crank with.

Do you guys have any idea about how to do this to make the gauge as accurate as it can be with the Rpm's?

Thanks again.

Matthew
