I’m going through and checking my connections. I’m in Tacoma too at Browns point. We’re planning on getting hauled out at Swantown in about a week from now.

why all the way down in Olympia? Hylabos is reasonable and allows owner work.

They full?

Mine does that when the battery is fully charged
When it starts playing up turn on some lights and see if it comes good

They would t allow us to do the amount of sanding we wanted to do there so we decided Swantown. We’ve also had a lot of people tell us that Hylebos were not easy to work with.

Re: Tachometer bouncing then nothing

Thank you everyone for all the advice! I will post an update as soon as I’m finished troubleshooting (connections, voltage output from the alternator, etc). Also I finally found a decent manual for our westerbeke 33 which I’ve been looking for some time now, as the original technical manual leaves a lot to figure out on your own. Here’s a link to the pdf Incase anyone is looking for this manual https://www.westerbeke.com/technical%20manual/43440_rev2_4cylinder_tech_man.pdf

Re: Tachometer bouncing then nothing

I had the same thing happen twice. First time it was a loose belt. The belt should be tight enough so that the alternator pulley cannot be turned by a bare hand at all. The second time the water pump froze up intermittently causing the same symptoms.

Re: Tachometer bouncing then nothing

So did some more poking around, correctly tensioned the alternator belt, checked voltage output from alternator (23-24?) seemed weird, I also test voltage at the back of my tach from; alternator input to ground and got 0 volts. I have the westerbeke admiral gauge cluster. I also have ”cruiser equipment” silver bullet 105A alternator and looks to be a cruiser equipment regulator (unfortunately “cruiser equipment” has gone out of business and I have not been able to find much info on these parts). With the engine running I show no more than 12V on my gauge cluster even though it seems the alternator is putting out juice. Looks like I have some more searching/researching to do. Also I have two gel house batteries and a separate cranking battery.

The emphasised sections strongly suggest the alternator is not working.
If you are using an auto ranging meter, the stated numbers (23-24?) might have been millivolts - such errors have caught the tyro before.

Newhaul's advice sounds prudent to me.

Re: Tachometer bouncing then nothing

I have the same issue and found this article explaining the issue for some including myself. Having solar adds to the issue in some cases
