Re: SSB Receiver recommendations

I have a little Icom IC 78 which are available in Australia for about A$1500 which I use to listen to weather reports when in remote places to listen to weather reports on SSB HF. I have an auto tuning ATU but there are cheaper alternatives which work well. I've had it since 2017 and it works quiet well with a back stay antenna and all up it cost me about A$2,200 but I did install it myself.

You're allowed more than one option....

If you want you can have an SSB transceiver AND little receiver to get wfax images using much less power.

I've never measured what my Icom power draw is in receive only but since it and the portables are both transisterised I doubt there's much difference.

With my Icom IC7000 ham set there is enough to make it worthwhile, bearing in mind if you want several days of sfc & 500mB it will be running for a good while. And imho a spare way to receive such important info midocean is worth the small expense. Plus something to listen to along the way.
Once I thought I was hallucinating someone talking about cricket quietly in the background a week or 2 out solo, turned out the turn radio on alarm button had got pushed and BBC world service was playing the test match commentary.

But your boat, make your mind up whatever way seems right, no right or wrong in the universe.
