ICOM VHF 510E smartphone control

I need a new VHF for my Starlight as the last one died. The ability to hear and use the VHF from the cockpit is critical to us. This model connects to an external speaker and advertises the facility to use a smartphone wirelessly as a controller. Does anyone have experience of how well this works? Our plotter already has a wifi network which we use to connect to an ipad as a 2nd cockpit display, largely for the radar. That didn’t always work well with our old Raymarine plotter but seems ok with the new axiom (yeah the plotter died as well…happy days). Advice from anyone using the smartphone option would be great, Thanks

We have the M510, and use the WiFi remote capability occasionally. Works great, especially in calm conditions. Very happy with the device overall.

In the picture I'm using the WiFi remote to coordinate passing some workboats on the Havel-Oder canal:


The VHF can either produce its own WiFi network, or join an existing one.

As an additional bonus, there is a Signal K plugin that can interface with the VHF.
