Sirius radio antenna & AM FM reception

There's a Sirius radio installed in my boat with a Raymarine external antenna connected to the sirius radio component. The unit itself which is the am/fm/cd player unit has a single antenna jack with a 6 inch yellow wire attached to it just hanging loose. I get poor AM reception, if any, and FM signal is weak, so much so that the scan feature does not work. QUESTION: Does the Sirius external antenna normally double as an am/fm antenna as well and it's not working well for some reason, or, is it completely separate. If so, I'd rather remove the existing antennas and replace with an external am/fm antenna just to the am/fm radio since I'm not interested in continuing to subscribe to sirius. Thoughts anyone? Thanks all.

The Sirius antenna is for the sat radio only and the unit should have an additional antenna for AM/FM. This is usually found attached to a small set of what might look like rabbit ears. You should be able to download from the net a manual for your radio with all of the specifics from the manufacturers web site.

Thanks Chuck. I guess that explains the bad reception. I'm going to remove the Sirius antenna and install an am/fm antenna. The hole is there for the wire, the wire is there to fish the new wire. The only tricky part, I'm guessing is the mount.

I said the exact same thing (ain't paying for no stinking satellite radio. . . .). I got a few months free with my purchase of the car: tried it, liked it. Have not listened to commercial radio in that car for two years now. It is cheap BS-free entertainment!
