Radar installation

I have a new Raymarine Quantum 2 to install. Due to configuration of transom & a solar panel I would like to mount the radar dome backwards on a pole to get less shading . Is there a reason not yo do this?

Re: Radar installation

First off, you should be able to adjust the forward angle of the radar in the chartplotter. I know my B&G allows this and my radar unit is not centered forward of my mast. Second, the mounting instructions should have some notes regarding big metal objects in the radar sweep and good and bad mounting locations. I am sure that someone with much more technical experience can answer this, likely an ex naval radar technician, but the answer to your question is likely in the manual. Good luck

Re: Radar installation

My Furuno has an adjustment in its software to add an angular offset to compensate if the radome's installation is not parallel to the boat's heading. On an installation like you propose, that offset would need to be 180°, otherwise the display would have what's ahead at the bottom and what's behind at the top.

The only thing I can think of that would be a problem is if your unit's heading adjustment is limited to a relatively small angle, which wouldn't accomodate the radome facing aft.

Re: Radar installation

My radome is mounted backwards because it fit better on the existing mast mount that way. The software allowed for a 180° offset so it functions perfectly when integrated with my MFD. I have Garmin products but I bet you also have the same option available to you.
