Possible to get GPS position data from NMEA1083 into Seatalkng network?

As the title suggests, we’ve got two old Garmin gps plotters that are NMEA1083. We’ve installed some new Raymarine kit using Seatalkng.

Is there anyway to get the GPS position data from the Garmins into the Seatalkng network?

I found a gateway kit on the Raymarine website (SeaTalk NG and NMEA 0183 Components | Raymarine) but it seems to be specifically for a VHF radio.

yep, I think they make one with a seatalkng end. otherwise you'd also need a nmea 2000 to seatalkng adapter cable.

Yes, seatalk NG is an option with Actisense now...

If you don't plan on adding any further NMEA 2000 instrumwnts to your system (unless the Garmein stuff is really old it may be NMEA 2000 compliant) just get the Actinsea for SeatalkNg. But if you are like me with other instruments that are NMEA2000 compatible go ahead and setup a NMEA 2000 backbone and join it to the SeatalkNG by making an adapter to join the two systems. There is not one readily avaiable so get a Seatalk Male connector and a NMEA 2000 female connector and hook them to the ends of the respective backbones. Now you have one fully compliant NMEA 2000 network and don't have to worry the stuff that connects is SeatalkNG or NMEA2000.
Thant's the way my combo Garmin/Raymarine network is setup. The "old" NMEA 0183 wiring is still connected but most of the units have their 0183 data turned off except that which goes to the Actinsea.

The reason for needing to go the route of two backbone end connectors is that SeatalkNg to NMEA adapters are only available for adapting to the Droplines which does noting to make the network all one continuous backbone. As far as I am aware a Backbone to Backbone adapter is not made - you have to make your own.

Thanks for all the suggestions. All our current kit is so old that none of is nmea 2000 (some of it doesn’t even have nmea at all).

So basically the only reason for trying to get gps from NMEA 0183 into the network was to avoid buying something new. The Actisense seems almost the same price as a new Raymarine gps antenna that is Seatalkng ready, so I may as well just get that.

Any new kit we buy will likely be Raymarine (to keep things simple) unless there is something much cheaper. We will see...

I am the other way around: an old Raymarine auto pilot ST6000 and a brand new chart plotter from Garmin.

The plotter has 2 NMEA 0183 output, and the Raymarine auto pilot type 100 computer course has a NEA0183 input output port. So, via that input I am able to feed Garmin track commands to the auto pilot.

I hate those proprietary protocol like seatalk. Hoppefully the open standard Signal K will take over this within a few years but I doubt.
