Navionics: Course, speed, and location freeze

I'm using Navionics on an ipad and recently when I am cruising offshore (east coast) my Navionics is working as expected but when I enter an inlet and get near to shore, the course, speed, and location freeze. When I close the Navionics app and re-open it works but intermittently. Anybody have an idea what is happening and how to fix ?

The Ipad may be losing its GPS signal.

Agreed. Sounds like the loss of the GPS signal. I notice this happens to me occasionally while running Navionics.

If it's a cellular iPad it might be coming into cell signal range. No idea if that is the problem but you could eliminate that possibility by turning cellular data off before approaching land and seeing if it makes any difference.

Re: Navionics: Course, speed, and location freeze

My Navionics app on iPad [all current] does this as well.

I wondered if the iPad GPS was a contributing factor, so I also tried using our boat WiFi which includes the boat’s main [external antenna] GNNS receiver data- effectively bypassing the iPad internal GPS.

The same issues reoccurred [and no noted loss of GNNS data on other networked devices using the same feed...]

This has intermittently happened all of 2023, through 2 or 3 upgrades of the app.

This unreliability factor has been added to my list of reasons for dumping the Navionics APP. [Apropos of Mike’s ongoing discussion on that topic…]

FWIW

Cheers, Bill

Re: Navionics: Course, speed, and location freeze

Many thanks to all. This is just one of the problems I'm having with Navionics with the recent upgrade. Now only 2 devices can be used at one time with the app. My wife and I each have used our iphones and the ipad in the past without any problems, now no more with the 2 device limit. When we choose to use our iphones with the app., my wife cannot see AIS targets and I can see targets intermittently with mine. The reliability of using Navionics has really deteriorated. Is anyone happy with an alternative ?

Interesting to see this intermittent problem. I did notice where we lost our fix on the Navionics app, which is run on my iPad. It seemed to happen when the pad was being blocked by other structures. Picking it up and point at the sky always recovered the GPS signal quickly, but now that I think about it, I don't recall this happening the previous season at all. Hmmmm.
