Re: iPad Case and Mount Options

The purpose of this thread is to discuss iPad mounts. The pros and cons of using one should be a different thread.

Actually Steve, your OP was answered very quickly. You cant expect any thread to remain with the origional question once your question/request has been more than adequately answered.

For those of us with tiller steering, much of this discussion is moot. Ipad and Iphone work great in the cockpit (with noted limitations).

I disagree. I got new info in post #39. I have no interest in the good / bad discussion.

Ignore them then.

A number of posters answered your question in the op with great ideas on the very first page. I have no doubt that in another 50 posts you will still find another great idea. But you cant expect the thread to be confined to such a brief question alone. It is the nature of CF, and in fact any discussion where a question is asked, to move on to other aspects. Thats evolution of a thread

If they annoy you, dont read or respond to them.

If the thread were moving in a meaningful direction, that would be one thing. It seems to me it was just getting personal and nothing new was being shared. The pros and cons of iPads were made clear. It's time to steer away from that one.

Re: iPad Case and Mount Options

I just purchased a second cellular iPad Air 2 earlier today, motivated by this thread. 128GB of memory and only $475 delivered. I'll load another set of charts onto it for free with my chart subscription. The original iPad which has performed flawlessly for nearly six years will now be relegated to provide music to the onboard music system along with its backup chart plotter duties. Already ordered a new Lifeproof waterproof Nuud case for it. ;-)

Ummmm, the OP stated what he was thinking of doing, (mounting a tablet at the helm and another below decks) and then asked for recommendations.

My recommendation is to instead mount a WIFI MFD at the helm, and a tablet below decks, for all reasons stated.

I think this is a valid recommendation, based on the original post.

I apologize to readers for my participation in the thread transgression.

I have and sincere motive to help others, and very strong convictions about this subject. No excuse. Will try to tone it down in future.

Well, its exactly what im now doing. thanks Rod.

I ordered es7 Raymarine, which has wifi. To 'control' the chartplotter from my ipad ill have to purchase an app. Just to view it, the apps free. But, its an expensive option. $2200 with an external gps antenna.

That's interesting. I just installed a Raymarine e7, and the iPad app to control it was free.

Thats the older models. Maybe the newer models you have to purchase the app to control it via wifi? I thought the older models you could only view, not control?

From what im reading the e7's provided wifi for remote viewing, not full control?

Exactly. Mounting chart plotter (or iPad for that matter) isn't really an option. The mobility of the iPad (and iPhone) pretty much makes it my only choice and again, subject to some of the limitations mentioned above (sunlight and heat), it works perfectly for me.
I run competing apps just for fun sometimes to see which gives me better info. I have a charging outlet in the cockpit so power isn't an issue.
Cheers,
OL1
