Re: Insatalling new 4G Simrad Radar this weekend , advice?

No idea, but I do not think there is anything wrong with my Radar, it does work well, show land profiles, great for tracking squalls etc.
Coming from my last job, I know a little about Radar theory and propagation and I believe we may be asking for more than is possible from these inexpensive, small, low power units.
I used to fish quite a bit and when fishing you watch for birds gathering, cause that often means fish are working bait fish and that's good fishing.
Holy grail for Radar on a fishing boat is if it would display birds, I have seen many claims, but never seen birds show up on Radar beyond visual range. I'll believe it when I see it.

It was unbelievable what the Radar on a Longbow Apache was capable of, but that Radome was about four ft and the Radar cost is well into the million of dollars, but even it I don't think would see birds from miles away

I think it must have been tuned out by auto sea state. Might happen if there are lots of whitecaps. A rib is a pretty crap radar target from near sea level....

Tuning is everything. I've installed a number of 4G units. They pick up ducks swimming next to the boats, SUP targets. The higher mounted the better reception.
