Visit to sailboat factory

Had a really cool experience this morning. Got to visit the factory where Tartan sailboats are built. What an intense operation.

They build them from layup, to cabinetry, to carbon fiber spars, all right in house. Pretty cool to see them go from start to finish. All under one roof.

Re: Visit to sailboat factory

Back in the sailing heyday I was through the Canadian biggies on the north shore of Lk. Ontario. CS, C&C etc....
Comforting in a way when you've actually seen how the company went about building the model of boat you now own. Not at all claiming I saw my boat being built, far too many years between the seeing and the buying!
Family boat shopping back then, when we stepped up to a 27 footer for a family of 4 and a dog!

Things have changed!

That’s a well built boat!

You can clearly see the perfect workmanship in the infusion and bulkhead attachment. Very nice.

What’s the rest of the story? Are those current photos? Do they still own the property or did they abandon it with the molds and other assets? Is this a case of corporate irresponsibility or has the site subsequently been cleaned up?

Built in the 1960s, the Hamlet plant was the second site for Tartan, which was based in Grand River, Ohio, according to the company’s website. A downturn in the marine industry, in the late ‘80s, resulted in manufacturing being consolidated in Ohio.
The property sat vacant, for several decades; but has recently recieved a grant, for redevelopment.

Re: Visit to sailboat factory

I took those in May 2019,there are many moulds scattered around,I was looking for any old Tartan related papers or logos.it appeared that a cheap furniture manufacturer had occupied the building since Tartan, check it out on Google Earth.
