Although the U.S. Navy lists its founding as 1775 with the formation of the Continental Navy, that service was disbanded in 1785 and the modern U.S. Navy in its present form was founded in 1794.

The Continental Navy was established in 1775 and disbanded between 1783 and 1785.

The USRCS was established in 1790 and over time became what we now call the USCG. There was continuity of organization from that time until now.

In 1794 the USNavy was established but it didn't have any vessels to put to sea until 1797. There has been continuity of organization from 1794 until now but not to the earlier date or organizational entity.

Likewise the Continental Marines were disbanded in 1783 and the US Marines were established in 1798, again with no continuity to the previous organization.

Accepting the 1775 dates for founding the USN & USMC is a matter of courtesy and tradition putting them on a similar footing with the USArmy for longevity and pride of service. The reality is both organizations trace their history back to the mid to late 1790s with little or no significant continuity to Revolutionary organizations.

Prohibition doesn't work... this was a drug search.
