They don't call it, "Stealing a Car".

Car theft is called, "Taking a car without owner's permission" and it's a slap on the wrist.

That's probably because an essential element of stealing anything in many jurisdictions is the intent to "permanently deprive the owner". Joyriding and abandoning the vehicle doesn't fit that definition, so the simple "taking" is made a separate offence.

I love seeing someone win for a change. I am not surprised the thief listing it on the local craigslist ad. Reaffirms, thiefs are dumb, dumb, dumb.

Re: This should make every feel Great!!

+1 .. !!

Had a similar experience cuppla years ago visiting my son in Brisbane. We went out for dinner and a movie and while walking along South Bank he spotted his previously stolen, much-tricked BMX bike being ridden by some low-life female.

We followed them (there was a bunch of adolescents, too many for us to take on in case any of them had concealed weapons like knives or whatever) and once we saw them go into a train station got the Station Master to call the cops (we knew they'd come quicker this way than if we simply called and reported) and so the cops turned up and my son described the unique features of the bike to the cop who then confronted the 'thief'.

Her pals all split as soon as the cops moved on her, but of course she denied stealing and it was 'loaned' from 'some guy' whose full name she didn't know....

Cops asked did we want to pursue it, as it looked unlikely to get a conviction, especially her being juvenile (and indigenous).

We said we got the bike, we're happy.

Talk about coincidence. If I hadn't been passing thru Brisabne on my way to collect the mast for my boat, and we hadn't decided to go to the movies at that time.....

Syncronicity sucks, doesn't it..?? lol
