Nah...the girls are the heroines, the boy friend a well meaning accessory..
...remember the girls solve the problem without him

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
someone mentioned it, but the easiest (and realistic) way to delay him is for him to have tanked a batch of bad diesel. ON a 70 footer he'll have good fuel filters and probably lots of spares, but if the fuel is really bad he'll run through all his spares just getting to a port that can handle him. Emptying, cleaning and refueling can easily end up taking a couple of days before he can set out again.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
Congratulations on your writing. Creating a story that others actually want to read and putting it on paper is far more challenging than most people realize. You are to be commended for the thousands of hours of effort required to accomplish such an endeavor. I have been fortunate to have published a novel with a heavy element of sailing incorporated into the story. My second novel is currently in pre-publication editing and should be released in December of this year. I also have several non-fiction publications to my credit. Additionally, I own and operate a small sailing school and charter service.I state all of that to justify my credentials to offer my assistance. I would me more than happy to read your work and offer suggestions as well as offer what guidance I can to help you obtain a publishing contract. The process is arduous at best. It can become incredibly discouraging to receive a few hundred rejection letters from publishers and literary agents. I know that feeling well, but I assure you that when the letter arrives that doesn't say, "No," the resultant emotion is enough to justify all of the hours of hard work and the stacks of rejection letters. Don't quit!If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact me any time.

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
You go girl! Don't let naysayers influence you... The words of experience from Daniellmason are great but he doesn't mention self publishing. As my age advances after a lifetime at sea one of my most enjoyable pleasures is consuming indie authors on my Kindle. There are some great novels (and some not so great ones, as well) many that have developed into a series. Unlike Mr Mason, I have no literary experience but am a voracious consumer. I have heard that self publishing is much more doable now than in previous years but I would get advice from someone who has done it... you have my very best wishes and encouragement in your venture.
While most of my life aboard has been on the west coast and I don't have the experience that many here at CF have in the Caribbean, I have delivered powerboats in the 50-100 foot range from Alaska to Panama and points between. I recall vividly one delivery from San Diego to Seattle where we wrapped a prop that caused problems with alignment, some strut damage and a rather bad leak in the stuffing box where the shaft enters the hull. This took about 4 additional days to sort out and turned what was an uneventful trip into a rather dramatic and concerned passage.
Again, good luck with your project... I'm already looking forward to reading it.
Cheers, Phil

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
I think your real problem is that you need to get on a boat and get involved in the cruising life (sounds like you want to anyway!). To write well about something you need to really know it otherwise the detail will not be convincing. It sounds like this is a theme you want to keep visiting not just a single chapter so the research is doubly important. If you think you are too old now read Frances Chichesters biography, he started n his 70's with a terminal cancer diagnosis and look what he did! I have met people still cruising in there 90's. You don't need a big expensive boat, a little old 30 footer with basic equipment is fine for the Caribbean. I speak as a reader not a writer

This. It'll also add drama in "Here's a problem, character needs to fix problem fast but it keeps being a problem" type of way. Some thrown tools, cursing, etc.. Like in "The Martian" - it was the whole book.
Or whatever Deus Ex you wanna throw in there, but bad fuel + bad comms would solve the time and the "why not call the CG" problems.

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
So he is rich, and he loves old boats. So he restored a 1952 vintage Philip Rhodes Bermudan Yawl that he bought for $350,000 and put another $400000 into the boat to make it like new. It sails about 6 to 7 knots and he can make 130nm a day going 24 X 7. He now is only 900nm away. He is trying to make the Bahamas but winds and lack of sleep, a tropical storm cause him delays. He started in Granada so he should have been there in 4 or 5 days, but the storm, the winds, the rain, all delay him and the trip takes 7 days. Here is his boat.

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
I would like the boyfriend better if his boat were old, maybe passed along to him through family, and he had to nurse along the old diesel engine. If its a rescue, he'll be going 24/7...I know I would.
Who wants the heroine to be rescued by a rich guy in a mega yacht...bleck...he should have skill and endurance, not money. If he's that rich, he'll just charter a faster boat or plane anyway, or just find another girl.
Also, the girl should have magic powers, like night vision or super strength...or the ability to control the wind. If there's a villain in your story, he should sail a big cat, loaded with solar panels so his drinks are ice cold all the time. Then a big wind could blow away his solar panels, and he would have to drink warm beer, and he would choke on it.
Sorry, got a little off topic.

Exactly. If I was a rich playboy this is the boat I would own. not some million dollar power yacht. And it works much better for her book.

Re: Sailor Writing a Book Needs Info
What a fun idea for a book! Good luck. You have gotten some really good suggestions. I like the idea of the boyfriend coming to rescue the women, but then perhaps needing assistance himself from bad fuel, bad prop, etc., and drifting in the Gulf Stream. In the meantime, maybe the women could jury rig what they need and get themselves out of the fix...
If you need an editor, a friend of mine is in business herself in Florida helping authors self-publish. She's an awesome person to meet. If you are interested in her contact, just send me a PM.
Just have to say, too, that you certainly have game! I can't believe you'll ever be "too old" for anything

Oh this story is getting to be really great! I really like the magic powers. Thanks Nikki for getting us started! And don't worry, by the time we're done our story will have nothing in common with yours, so we won't be stealing your idea

So the boyfriend is also on a sailboat not a power cruiser and motor sailing the whole way?
