Re: Public opinion

Should have done this post as a poll. I think you would have gotten 100% GO!

Agree with Jim though get the electric assistance, especially with a dodgy ticker.

I do! I'm going to carry on sailing! More's the point, everything will work because all the boat jobs will be done by then!

Re: Public opinion

You guys do realize the OP wants to use what we write as ammunition or justification. What we don't know is why he suggested to do it the way he has. Or anything of what has led up to it, except for the bypass surgery.

Re: Public opinion

I had double bypass with two widow Makers 21 years ago. I’m 73 next month and still sail. I have electric windlass but manual witches on my in mast furling main and for my roller furling jib. I do my furling manually. I say go for it. I get checked regularly by my internist and Cardiologists and have an implanted defibrillator - on my third one. Had two stents along the way. Get the Milwaukee drill and get an autopilot so you are not pushed to the limit physically. Of course, get your Dr’s advice too.

I vote yes, as long as you feel you are capable. It isn't a one way trip, if you decide after a few sails that it is too much, then you can always stop and sell the boat. Life should be fun, and nobody should tell you when that fun should end.
Enjoy yourself.

Re: Public opinion

I'm definitely in the go for it crown.

76 in December and had to put a block and double line on the main halyard last year. Intending to buy one of those Millwauki gadgets when I turn 80.

Only thing I'd add to the precautions is make sure you have a sound reliable engine with enough power to take on head winds and seas.

Re: Public opinion

My Dad is 82 and still goes away on his boat alone. He only recently started to take a mobile phone and let us know each night where he is. It may be dangerous but if something happens to him we will know he died enjoying life to the end not locked up in an aged care home. Probably more likely he would have a car accident whilst he's driving.

Re: Public opinion

If not now, when?

And just let your family know that you're completely okay with dying at sea. I did - and they shut up right quick.

Remember to take it slowly. Give yourself time to re-learn/remember the elements you already know. They'll come back to you.

Fair winds!

Re: Public opinion

FWIW, I am sixty one years old, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure two plus years ago, and spent some time in cardiac ICU. After a recovery period I have been lucky enough to be able to sail as a full time cruiser with my wife. I am able to do all the normal sailing stuff. My overall stamina is not as good as it used to be, but I have learned to adapt.

You should have a discussion with your cardiologist, letting her/him know your intentions and go from there, in the end it is your decision. I suspect you know if you are strong enough to go sailing, which I suspect you feel you are, and are looking for examples of folk like me who are still able to. If you are able to, you should absolutely do it. Life is short live it !

Fair winds,

Perfect!

To the OP... You've sailed before. You know what you're getting into. If it is too much for you, I assume you will back off. And finally, yeah, at your age you don't need anyone's permission to do anything!

I know. They're family. They care about you. You don't want them to worry or be unhappy. I get that. I feel the same way. But in the end this is your life, and your decision to make. Not theirs.

Good luck.

Re: Public opinion

If it was me, I'd probably do it. I'd probably try not to do it alone, but I'd do it.

It's not like you're going to live forever anyway. I'd rather have a couple of years doing what I want to do, than twice that many just sitting on my ass watching TV.
