Going to work at a marina!

I'm a 911/police dispatcher and I have a lot of time off. We work 12 hour shifts and I only work 14 days a month. I've been thinking about picking up a part time job, but did't want to do anything that would be a "job". I wanted to do something that would be fun, and that I would enjoy.

So on a whim last week, I checked out a local marinas website to see if they had any openings. I didn't find anything on the website, so I took a chance and sent them a message and asked if they had any openings. I was surprised when they responded and had a part time harbor patrol position open. They asked if I was interested and I emphatically responded yes!

I met with the Harbor Master this morning and got a run down of the work involved, took a tour of the marina, and it looks like I'll be going to work two days a week as a harbor patrolman.

Its going to be VERY nice to have the extra money, to get the extra exercise by walking all the docks at least once a shift, and gain the experience of being around all the different boats.

The marina has been family owned since 1958, is a very large 55 acres in size, and one of the largest in our areas. There are about 1000 boats I think, and they range from racing sail boats to live aboards of all kinds.

I can't wait! Maybe I'll see some of you cruisers in the future!

I heard THAT!!! And you sho' right!

Even though I wont be able to be out on a boat, being on the water on the docks is going to be very peaceful.

The only thing I'll have to worry about is a missing dock board, or a sinking boat. I won't have to listen to people complaining non-stop about their neighbors cat crapping in their azaleas!!

The other day one of the boat detailers came to me worried because someone had taken pictures of him and his license plate and said he was going to report him to the office for using "his" hose off the dock.
Some folks will always find cat crap in their azaleas.

What a great part time job! You will get to know all the different types of boats and make friends with the owners. Terrific!

Remember, when a boat comes into dock and throws you a line, you cannot, no matter how big and muscly you are, hold 7 or 10 tons of boat. So get a turn round a cleat and be ready to lock it off

I know! The Harbor Master said the evening shift is usually the busiest and you'll get to know a lot of boat owners just walking the docks. There were SO MANY boats of all shapes, sizes, and makes.

I think its going to be a very fun, peaceful, and good learning experience for me. Especially because I want to move aboard our own boat in the next couple of years. And the extra money will help me pay off some debt now so that dream of moving aboard can happen that much faster!

AND, there were A LOT of boats for sale by owner. Things that I have never seen on boattrader.com or yachtworld.

Closer to the source .... Closer to the bargain. You will hear lots of stories and first hand deals of those moving up, down or out of boating. Good luck, hope you don't ever have to call 911.

The hose thing. Many many years ago I had a coworker at a marina who got yelled at by the owner of a boat for using his hose to wash of his boat. (really). My coworker being a bit vindictive punched a series of tiny holes in the hose and then started throwing bread crumbs up on the hardtop of the boat every time he walked by. So in a few weeks when the owner came back there was quite a bit sea gull droppings on the boat so he took he hose to wash it off but as soon as he turned on the water he found he had a nice sprinkler hose. Long story short just be nice to everybody.

This sounds, border line, like a crime to me.

I agree it is always good practice to be nice to everyone even though humans can't always agree &/or get along, but disrespecting someone else's property or destroying it is definitely not cool!
