First Offshore passage

Hello all!
Veteran sailor here...but all coastal and inland. I will be doing my first offshore delivery from Seattle to SF on a Catalina 42 in a few weeks with the owner and 2 other crew (4 total). While I consider myself an experienced sailor with over 25 years of racing experience, this will be my first true offshore passage (I've done a few NOOD races).

We will be 60-80 miles offshore, ~1000nm total trip. The boat will be safety rigged with all requisite gear (jacklines, liferaft, epirb, etc). I will have my foulies, safety harness/life vest with tether and plb.

Plan on bringing a loaded kindle and computer with movies/shows.

Any advice?

I'd leave the computer behind. Or at least check with the skipper before taking it.


Power demands and time to "goof off" and watch movies on a delivery passage are both issues.

Agree with Stu, although depends on number of crew. Assuming a 4 on 4 off watch with 4 or less crew there'll be minimal time for watching movies.

With 4 crew, there should be plenty of time to relax. Having some movies won't hurt. If power's an issue, the skipper will let you know.


Unless you're harbor hopping (doesn't sound like it), you'll find the weather is often better farther offshore, say 200nm, enough to get off the shelf.
