Transiting from Naval Station GTMO, Cuba on 44 Gulfstar Ketch. The boat hit a coral head off Chub Cay and fractured the keel such that without continuous pumping from a 30K gph pump it could not maintain buoyancy. IMIS flew salvors to Chub and arranged salvage and towing to Chub where one of their guys pickled engine and generator as the other guy worked to ascertain water entry points. Once boat evaluation was concluded I discussed options with Al G of IMIS and the salvors and elected the only financially reasonable course of action. The end was that it did not pay to barge it to FL for repair due to amount of fracturing and it was towed to deep water and sunk. Learned many lessons that day and the biggest one was a good insurance company may cost money but it is worth the investment. IMIS was the only company that would offer me a reasonable rate to insure the boat in GTMO. Thanks

Thanks for sharing that, Pat!
Quite a story.

The first two boats I owned were both insured for the entire Bahamas chain and Turks & Cacios through Boat U.S. I don't know how they compare to the other companies mentioned here. I've never had a claim.
