I assume this is your 40 DS
You mean those parts of life that get in the way of a good budget? What you plan and reality are never easy to match.

Insurance, for example is a fixed expense. You can go the frugal route and forgo it, but what would the budget look like if you lost your boat, or worse...

There is no typical and the OP is kind enough to show their actual to the penny

Re: 7 years of cost data

I never broke things down, but our yearly expenses averaged less than $2000/mo in the 90's (South Pacific) and were a bit over $3,000/mo in the Med in 2006-2009 and E/W coast US/Caribbean in 20010-2012.

You can do it for less, but we were out to enjoy ourselves and we spent less than our income.

Thank you for sharing! If we had the discipline to note all the expenses as you have, we would plan much better the way we spend our money!

One doubt - is this your total expenses or the ones related to the boat? I ask this because we spend 4 months in our boat (east med) and 8 months home (Portugal) and, without the precision of your numbers, it seems that we spend more when we are at home.

Vladis -- this is everything we spent be it on the boat or when we went back to visit the kids -- every penny we spend is in here.

we really do not budget -- but we know what we got coming in and we know what the boat will probably take and at times we save up a bit to do major maintenance before things break -- then again wait till next year as I had major medical this past couple weeks with gall bladder surgery - that will put in crimp in things this year

Re: 7 years of cost data

Good, but purposeless for planning.

You can account for vodka, bean cans, insurance..

But not for occasional MUST DO

Bow thrust impeller 1200eur
New rigging 9000eur
Rigging update 1800eur
House battery gone 1300eur
Spectra haliyard 400eur
Etc
As a consequence... I stopped planning.

PHASING OUT major EXPENSES, and having a 4000eur liquidity BUFFER, are far more important issues in LT cruising:-)

You need to read it more. It is excellent for planning.

The only people who shouldn't do any planning are rich a-holes and kids that are just going back to work as the plan.

Re: 7 years of cost data

I added a column to each year so I could see the average cost per item per year in addition to the percentage cost.

Wow.

Looking at the individual items, my first thought was "how did they spend so little?" And then, of course, "how did it add up to so much?"

I've been doing my budget planning based on averaging about $3K/Month. Probably going to have to go back and look it all over, maybe increase it.

Ouch.

Also, thank you.

Re: 7 years of cost data

Thank you for all the work. Is there a way to convert the percents to actual dollar figures on excel? It also is strange to me as to why people, who respond, have to be so negative in regards to postings. This is what it cost you yet they seem to doubt you. By the way i always look for to reading your posts on different topics because they are usually informative and humorous.

Where did you have to pay these prices? The battery (no matter what size or type) and halyard are especially high to what we pay in New England.
