I just wanted to say thanks to all for the suggestions. I have a few of the books mentioned, like the Coles book, anapolis seamanship, and I downloaded the free PDFs above.



I'm at least a little familiar with what the gulf and the Atlantic can throw at you -- but mostly as a surfer, big-wave bodysurfer, and from sailing small stuff like sunfishes and hobie cats (up to about 30kts).



I don't have a lot of experience with keel boats, hence my wanting something to use as a reference book for offshore techniques in a larger boat.


I realize there's no substitute for experience, but I also need a reference to show me how to, say, set up a reefing system. I don't know if my boat has blocks where they need to be, or where they would need to be. It doesn't have anything at the mast base for a vang, so I'll have to install something, but at least I know what the basic setup is there. I have no idea where to install blocks for reefing.



The boat in question will be a Cal 20.
