Liquid tape

I use dielectric grease on connectors when I don’t have heat shrink. Is liquid tape any good?

I find liquid tape to be messy, a bit more brittle than heat-shrink, and its bond to the wire is not as good as adhesive-lined heat-shrink. You also have to allow time for setting, which can slow down your working. The bottle doesn't keep a long time once opened.

Regardless of heat-shrink, liquid tape or whatever, I sometimes also use dielectric grease on the exposed parts of connectors to delay corrosion.

Re: Liquid tape

My shower bilge pump wouldn't run when wet, somewhat defeating the purpose, so I slathered liquid tape over the wires from the float to the pump and it worked. Apparently covered a short I couldn't see. But it is really messy and I don't recommend knocking the bottle over.

Re: Liquid tape

I tried it on several connections. It all fell apart within a few months.

Re: Liquid tape

Use the dielectric grease on the conductor and put the liquid tape on thick. As others wrote, it's messy and does not like to be flexed but it will work and hold up over time otherwise.

Re: Liquid tape

The battery lug connectors are recommended by Mercruiser in the FSM to be protected by liquid tape, under the large molded rubber boots.

After assembly all those exposed connections are painted by me w/ liquid tape for corrosion protection.

This is a time consuming process, but these irregular-shaped parts need protection and this is the only way to satisfy that requirement.

The product works fine for this application.

Also, just carry a stock of heatshrink, not expensive

Re: Liquid tape

There are times when liquid electrical tape can be quite handy, like field repairs where its hard to access wires to do a new splice. I repaired a short in an engine wire harness on a Lagoon 38 recently. It was buried in the wire harness, there was not enough wire length between damage and next connector to make new splice...so...I opened up the harness just enough to cover it w liquid tape, then taped over that to protect it. Worked for over 2,500 miles. Owner knows proper repair should be made when practical.

Re: Liquid tape

Use it over self-amalgamating tape, not under or instead of. That way, it can be more easily removed and is less messy as removing the tape will expose a cleaner connection.

Liquid tape

It has its uses and works well where not much else will.
Sorry about the lighting, but I needed a disconnect for my Inverter and one that was rated for the max surge current, not the correct term but is what comes to me, plus it needed to be very close to the battery bank and I wanted it easily accessible, that meant it was put in the open and would therefore have uncovered terminals.
I covered them with two layers of liquid electrical tape, I think that works better than anything else.
