3M Finnesse-It works great for that light rust too.

cheech... I like the 3M as well as good ol' Meguiar's cleaner wax... they do the rust well and look dang good, but I think they leave a wax barrier promoting the problem anaerobically so to speak... ***Time for a science experiment***

You bet Jack... Any marine stainless cleaner found on Amazon or the like will usually perform well... For the quickie if you got it on hand... the above's make most stainless very purdy without killin' yer arm...

Re: Best products to clean relings?

I sometimes have to clean a bigger boat where there is plenty of rust stains and so I have developed this workflow:

- wash all SS with fresh water / detergent / sponge,
- wash down with fresh water,
- dry,
- apply product as pictured above,
- go over with dry cloth, rubb and buff.

The above give us up to 3 months of very good looks and up to 6 months of decent (3ft test) looks. We are living in very dusty and corrosive environment here (Canary Islands). I have seen SS remaining clean for up to a year elsewhere.

There are also liquid cleaners that you apply with a wet brush or a sponge and then just wash them down thoroughly. But I found the stains return sooner.

Have fun making her shiny again!

Spotless Stainless. Apply the gel with a chip brush, wait, hose off with fresh water. Temperatures should be above 70f and its best on a cloudy day or in shade (slower evaporation rate).

Easy but overpriced, IMHO.

Or you could save bucks and get Bar Keepers Friend. IMO, better than anything else.

Re: Best products to clean relings?

We use the 3M product pictured. But I have been advised by some friends whose boat looks rather spotless to try coconut oil. Not got around to trying it yet. Don't know why I have a bunch of stainless that needs cleaning. But thought I would pass along something you might already have on board.

Cheers
Mark

Re: Best products to clean relings?

Barkeepers Friend to remove the light rust, as in the OP's picture.

Spotless Stainless for heavier rust.

Follow up with Sheila Shine to keep it clean longer.

Barkeepers Friend comes in a spray foam bottle now. Very convenient.

;-)

We are in Canary Islands where Sahara dust covers boats a couple of times each year. This dust brings metal particles (from African mines) that make extremely aggressive corrosion conditions. I have seen SS wire split mid-length where unaware sailors tied laundry lines to their standing rigging.

And one of the boats I maintain is a 70' beast from the 80'ies - endless amounts of SS to clean ...

I am possibly an extreme case scenario. Practice makes perfect ;-)
