I deeply resent this article. It can not be true. How did my Oakland escape this list? Therefore it must be wrong. smile

After all, how many of you have ever heard of an armed robbery or a murder involving strangers in a marina anywhere in the world?
Just by virtue of this post you get it. In a region with a murder rate of 50 per 100,000 versus 1 per hundred thousand you would employ a different set of behaviors. You would give a higher weight to a guarded fenced marina wrt to anchoring out. For an evening excursion location of the restaurant would become an important factor. Situational awareness is critical in locations that you are a stranger to.

Situation awareness is obtained through multiple data sources including published statistics, local knowledge, and common sense.

I agree with your saying about multiple data points including advise from locals. If anything this list gives a heads up about areas to be very very careful in. Including your choice of marina.

Another data point would be to have a geographic list of street robbery and attacks. Not all that is bad ends up with being shot.

And I am not for one minute suggesting people become overly afraid. But being aware and taking precautions is a good thing to promote I would think.

I posted this over on a shooter forum even there it hasn't progressed into a gun thread.

Re: Top 50 Murder Cities - Includes Jamaica & Brazil

It breaks my heart to see Honduras so high on the list. My wife is from there and many family members are there in San Pedro Sula. It is important to remember not only where the crime, not just murders, is happening, but to whom and why. Honduras, along with El Salvador is desperately trying to deal with the influx of violent people, gang members, that became members here in LA and then were deported to their home countries. This along with the drug trafficking routes changing in the area aggravates the problem there. There has always been a certain level of crime, but the level of violence now is different. The poorer countries don't have enough resources to deal with it effectively yet. However, you still can't paint the whole area with the same brush. 99.9% of the people you meet will be the nicest folks you could ever imagine, and they will help you know where to go and where to avoid.

Re: Top 50 Murder Cities - Includes Jamaica & Brazil

It's a totally ridiculous post.

Someone's been watching too TV ........

Usually in most murder cases, the people involved knew each other etc.

It's not like they are just lying in wait for the cruisers to come ashore.

Geez.............

If this were the case wouldn't you expect the murder-rate numbers to be somewhat equal everywhere?

I'm sorry for your wife seeing the deterioration of her country. It is very sad. It's also sad since these places are wonderful for cruisers. For me I will be careful and very particular where I drop anchor and what marina I stay in.

Yes, it is sad to see the increase in problems in Honduras. We used to do lot of road trips in mainland Honduras, but no more.

Exclude mainland Honduras from your cruising options...lots of problems along the coast in recent years.

As for the map, it shows Chicago safer than Reykjavik or Dublin? I don't think so!. I've never been to Iceland, but an Irish trauma surgeon once told me Ireland sends its trauma residents to Chicago for training. Too quiet in the Emerald Isle but at County Hospital in Chicago it's a steady parade of gunshot victims every day
