It would have been nice to learn which particular ocean currents are most likely to spawn rogue waves, and where, since currents are not of constant velocity throughout their length, nor do they maintain constant orientation. Should one suspect the Gulf Stream in a strong north wind to generate anything more than steep short waves, for example? Perhaps someone can apply the results of this study to practical prediction of, at least, rogue wave probabilities in various parts of the oceans. The predictions should be supported by physical evidence if the theory has real value.

According to the article, the coast of South Africa is particularly susceptible to rogue waves specifically because the prevailing wind opposes the prevailing current.

I will chime in here since the sited article refers to the SS Spray and a wave she encountered off of SC. Just the other day siting at the dock on the creek here in Charleston we had big tides with strong with against the current. I swear, there were waves developing in this little creek that were approaching 1'. Completely produced by an opposing wind and current.

I think I'm just going to deny that rogue wave exist! Have enough stuff to worry about already without thinking about some sudden killer wave that I can not plan or do anything about!
