Rogue Wave Nearly Takes Out Sailboat in Waikiki Harbor (Video)
I did a quick search here and could not find if it , so perhaps it has not already been posted.
This captain must have been a couple of slices short of a loaf to take his boat into this.
Maybe as the title suggests it was a rogue wave (or set of) but surely the surfers presence must have given some hint of what could be coming

Actually he wasn't. Breakers in the channel are a fact of life for those of us at the Ala Wai Yacht harbor (myself included), you can see them before you head out and then it's just a matter of whether you want to tackle them or not. OK, most would not, and some do. The last breaker in the video was definitely not at that location, so there is a fair amount of hype to the whole thing.

Pretty much. It wasn't a fun time I'm sure. It appeared like the next wave wasn't much for the video so they added a better one. Rouge wave it clearly was not.

Re: Rogue wave nearly takes out sailboat in Waikiki Harbor (video)
I would be more worried about the surfer in the water just in front of the boat during the early part of the clip. What was the bloke doing trying to remove the sail cover in the middle of all that that should have been off before leaving the slip.
I think the skipper got caught out because a bit of preparation and planning would see sails ready to go and the crew in the cockpit with lifejackets.
Still easy to comment sat in an armchair from the other side of the world. I have been in a similar position exiting Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. Except we bottled it when we saw the size of the waves and turned round. As we clawed away from the entrance of the lough against 10 knots of current sweeping us out the red fuel can on the rib ran out of petrol. Could we get the spare can connected up, nope, panic. Outboards run quite a long time on the fuel in a 2m fuel line.

Sailing or Surfing, Pick One...
I am with Pete, I couldn't believe those surfers would linger so closely...especially the one in the very beginning...Craziness!!!
Can't say though that it might be fun to experience this if I knew my boat and my life would be intact at the end...

Fortuitously theres no need for speculation- just read the video description:
Quote:
Captain Raf and Duke are taking out a group of tourists on their 40' sailboat for an ash scattering ceremony in Waikiki Harbor when a huge set rolls into the channel, outside the harbor buoy. With no time to avoid the waves, Captain Raf faces the swell head-on while Duke holds onto the mast for dear life!

This ones great too:

Wonder if Captain Ian sold the boat or not?!? No interviews with his crew members, that is too bad...

Yeah. Quite amazing. The boat seems to be doing quite well though. I am not sure though if I would like to be in the boat shown in the second video!
Amazin'. THX for sharing!

Looks llike a good breeze from the stern. A wee bit of headsail could've given some stability, and help getting out.........i2f

Re: Rogue wave nearly takes out sailboat in Waikiki Harbor (video)
The channel at Ala Wai gets closed out occasionally as does the channel at Kaneohe. One time the DLNR - Boating folks told a sailor that he had to prove his boat could get underway and sent him out on a day similar to the one above. The boat was lost and so was the power boat that was tailing him to check that he could get underway. Pretty bad decision on both their parts. Surfers and swimmers in the channel and crossing the channel are one of the hazards in Hawaii.
kind regards,

1st video, don't see anyone wearing a PFD, which I would certainly want on. 2nd video reminds me of days sailing my Hobie 14 off the beacht thru the surf in Santa Cruz. Whooeee!
