While looking for something else I came across this CG report of statistics. I personally found it interesting as it wasn't really what I would have guessed/said (other than alcohol)

Weather is a much smaller contributor to deaths than I would have believed. And hull failure was only the primary contributor in 4 deaths.

The USCG does a lot of terrific work (SAR and such).

Unfortunately, they truly suck at collecting data and suck even worse at collating and analyzing it.

If you look into the raw data collection behind these reports . . . they are a total mess. I have tried really hard to use it to make sense of PFD safety outcomes. But both I and the CDC (who were commissioned to do it) both concluded it was not possible with the existing data, but would be very possible if the USCG simply followed the DOT & NHTSA protocols/standards/process for data collection.

It includes all the data going back to 2005, and allows you to search and sort based on a wide range of parameters.

I don't know where they got those numbers, but the ones in table 2 for Florida aren't even close, unless I'm misinterpreting it, which is possible.



The report posted by Mike O'Reilly seems a lot more useful.

Do we have numbers for 2018 now? Interesting that sailboats don't seem to show up much.
