This I know the answer to although I originally heard it in a slightly different version. However I didn't figure it out until a clue was given regarding one particular kind of wildlife one might encounter on the trip.

After reading all of this, I am so glad I sail out of San Felipe, Baja on the Sea of Cortez! I sail due east until I hit the mainland. Then I jump off the boat and ask a fisherman where I am. I follow his directions.

The fundamental mistake you have made is to believe the TV program.
The question did not say 'if you follow the compass course of 90 degrees' so; due East is 90 T.
The answer was incorrect. Call the contestant back for a replay
